Suno, a company that uses artificial intelligence to create music, has added a new feature to its iPhone app. Users can now generate 30-second songs directly inside an iMessage conversation using a text or voice prompt (Engadget). To use it, you tap the plus button inside an iMessage chat and select Suno. You can paste a message from a friend as a prompt, pick a music genre, and the app creates a 30-second song based on what you gave it. Suno describes the feature as living in the "iMessage keyboard."

There is a catch. The person receiving a Suno-generated song must also have the Suno app installed on their phone to hear it (Engadget). Suno's release notes say recipients can listen directly in iMessage, but the requirement that both people have the app limits how far a song can spread. In a group chat where not everyone has Suno installed, those people will not be able to hear anything.

Suno is promoting the feature heavily. A landing page at suno.com/text-message-song, live since at least April 2026, references the TikTok "text to song" trend as inspiration for the product (Suno). The company's iOS page states plainly: "Suno is now in iMessage, so you can turn your texts into custom songs" and adds, "The group chat will never be the same" (Suno iOS).

The broader context here is about getting the product in front of more people. Suno's core product is an AI system that creates full songs with instruments and vocals from short text descriptions. It has been available through Suno's website and mobile apps. Moving it into iMessage does not change how the AI works. The technology is the same. What changes is where you use it. iMessage is one of the most-used communication tools on the iPhone, and putting song creation directly in a chat removes several steps between having an idea and getting a result. Apple opened iMessage to outside developers back in iOS 10, which led to a wave of sticker packs and mini-apps inside messages, though most of those experiments faded away.

The requirement that recipients also have the app installed is the design choice that will most shape how widely this catches on. It means the feature works less like sending a photo, which anyone can view, and more like a two-way app where both people need the same software. That works in group chats where friends have already installed Suno. It works less well when you want to share a song with someone who has never used the app.

The voice prompt option is a detail worth flagging. Letting users speak their idea instead of typing it lowers the effort even further. Combined with the ability to paste a friend's message as a starting point, Suno is designing for the simplest possible creative input inside a chat.

Suno's decision to tie the feature to the TikTok text-to-song trend positions it as a social product meant for sharing, not as a music-making tool that happens to have a sharing option. That distinction matters for how Suno will measure success. If the goal is getting people to create songs inside chats and getting their friends to install the app, iMessage is a good fit. If the goal is helping people make music on their own, iMessage is a detour.

The 30-second limit on the output is a practical constraint, likely tied to the cost and time of running the AI. It is long enough to work as a musical greeting or a joke, and short enough that the song comes back quickly enough to still feel part of the conversation. Whether that length satisfies people who have used Suno's longer songs on the web is an open question, but for a messaging context, it seems designed for quick attention spans rather than serious music-making.
