A Record-Breaking El Niño May Be Coming. Here's What That Means.

Australia's Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has forecast that the El Niño currently happening across the Pacific Ocean could become the strongest ever recorded. The bureau's own climate model predicts that ocean temperatures in a key part of the Pacific could reach about 3.3°C above normal. If that happens, it would beat the old record of 2.6°C above normal, set in January 1983, by a wide margin The Guardian.
El Niño is a natural climate pattern that happens every few years. During an El Niño, the surface waters of the Pacific Ocean along the equator get warmer than usual. Think of it like the ocean running a fever — that extra heat changes weather patterns all over the world. When the fever is higher, the effects are bigger.

Different climate models give a range of forecasts, but all of them point to a strong event. Model forecasts suggest this El Niño could peak between 2.2°C and above 3°C above normal in the Niño 3.4 region, according to the BoM. The bureau's own model sits at the high end, predicting about 3.3°C. Since September 2025, the BoM has changed how it measures El Niño. It now uses something called a Relative Niño index. The 1991–2020 baseline the bureau uses is itself warmer than earlier decades, so the temperature rises being measured are on top of an already higher starting point. The shift to the Relative Niño index makes the high readings even more striking: even when you filter out the general warming of the tropics, the central Pacific signal remains extreme.
What bears watching in the coming months is whether the different models start to agree more closely as the event nears its expected peak. The gap of about 0.8°C between the lower-end forecasts and the BoM's own projection is not small, and seasonal models are known to be less reliable the further out they look. But the fact that 14 independent forecasts, as reviewed by Hausfather, all point in the same direction gives weight to the conclusion even if the exact size of the event is still uncertain.
For Australia, the effects are direct. El Niño typically brings warmer and drier conditions across eastern and northern Australia, with higher bushfire risk during the summer peak. For the broader Pacific region, a record-strength event would test fisheries, farming, and water systems that are already under pressure from sustained global warming. The 2027 timeline for a potential record-hot year gives governments and agencies a narrow planning window, but one shaped by enormous uncertainty about how a disturbance this large interacts with a climate system that has already been altered.
