Dr. Chan said that unusually low winter sea ice in both 2025 and 2026 makes clear that Arctic sea ice loss has not stopped (The Guardian).

The long-term trend is still striking. Every September, Arctic sea ice shrinks to its lowest point of the year. That September minimum has dropped by half since 1979, when satellites first began measuring it. In 2025, the minimum tied with 2008 for the 10th-lowest ever recorded, at 1.78 million square miles (4.60 million square kilometers), according to NASA (NASA).

The earlier 2025 study, which found a roughly two-decade plateau in sea ice loss, had led some scientists to wonder whether natural ups and downs in the climate were temporarily balancing out the broader warming trend in the Arctic. The new findings, showing that this period has ended with one dramatic year of winter decline, make that explanation harder to rely on. A single year of data cannot, on its own, prove a new trend. But a 5.8% drop in one winter is large enough to demand attention from climate scientists and policymakers who are watching how the Arctic responds to human-caused warming.

One detail worth noting is that this slowdown's end was spotted in winter data, not in the September numbers that usually make headlines. Winter sea ice has received less public attention. The new study's focus on the winter months suggests that something about how ice forms during the dark Arctic winter may be changing in ways the summer numbers alone do not reveal.

The broader takeaway is about how we read climate trends. The 2005–2024 slowdown lasted long enough that some experts believed the Arctic might be entering a different pattern. These new findings complicate that view. They are a reminder to be cautious before treating a multi-year pause as proof that a long-term trend has changed course.

The Arctic has been warming at three to four times the global average rate. If the slowdown turns out to have been a temporary pause rather than a lasting shift, climate projections that were adjusted downward during that period may need to be revisited. The 2025 sea ice minimum, while not a new record low, still falls well below the 1981–2010 average and fits the long-term decline seen since satellite records began.
