Stellantis Picks Mobileye to Build Hands-Free Driving for Its Cars

Stellantis and Mobileye announced a partnership on July 21, 2026 to bring hands-free driving features to select future Stellantis vehicles, with the first systems expected to reach production in 2027 The Verge.
The deal uses Mobileye's EyeQ chip, a specialized computer designed for processing driving data, paired with a program called Road Experience Management, or REM. REM collects real-time driving data from Mobileye-equipped cars across multiple automakers to build and continuously update a global 3D map. It works like a shared navigation app where every car on the network contributes what it sees and gets a more complete map in return. The system Stellantis will deploy lets drivers take their hands off the wheel while keeping their eyes on the road. It includes intelligent lane keeping and can work on unmarked roads within designated areas and conditions. The partnership comes after a notable change in direction at Stellantis. The difference between these two levels of technology matters. That places Stellantis on a path many competitors have already taken. General Motors uses Mobileye predecessor technology in some vehicles and built its own Ultra Cruise system for higher-end models. BMW, Volkswagen, and Ford all have existing Mobileye relationships. The Stellantis deal extends Mobileye's reach further into the top tier of global automakers.

But the REM network effect is compounding: each new automaker that joins adds more data contributors, improving map coverage and freshness for everyone. By choosing Mobileye's approach, Stellantis gets hands-free capability on marked and unmarked roads, map data it does not have to build itself, and a chip family that has been proven across millions of production vehicles. The tradeoff is that the driver must stay attentive. The system does not allow eyes-off operation.
The unanswered question is brand and model allocation. Stellantis has fourteen brands with widely varying price points and regional footprints. Where the technology debuts will signal whether the company views it as a premium feature for high-end cars or something intended for broad rollout.
