A large new study published in JAMA Neurology has found that people who live with long-term road traffic noise may have a higher risk of developing Parkinson's disease. The study followed 3.1 million people in Denmark aged 40 and over for 18 years, making it the largest study of its kind (The Guardian).

Parkinson's disease is a condition that gradually damages parts of the brain, leading to tremors, stiffness, and difficulty with movement. The researchers wanted to know whether the noise from cars, trucks, and buses on roads could play a role in raising someone's chances of developing it.

To measure this, they estimated how much road noise reached each person's home, looking at both the side of the house facing the road and the side facing away from it. They found that for every 11.5 dB increase in noise on the loudest side of the home, the risk of Parkinson's rose by about 3% over the study period. A decibel, or dB, is a unit used to measure how loud a sound is.

One finding stood out. People who had a quieter side of their home seemed to have some protection against the added risk. In other words, it was not just about how loud the noise was overall. It also mattered whether there was a quieter space to retreat to within the home.

The researchers, including co-author Thomas Münzel, took air pollution into account in their analysis, since pollution from traffic could be a separate factor affecting health. However, they did not have data on individual habits like diet or exercise. They argued this gap was unlikely to change the results, because the link between noise and Parkinson's held steady across people of different education and income levels. If lifestyle habits were really behind the connection, they would expect to see the link weaken or shift across those groups.

Anna Hansell, a professor of environmental epidemiology at the University of Leicester who was not involved in the study, pointed out that the study design does not prove that noise causes Parkinson's. It shows a connection, but cannot rule out other factors that were not measured. This is a common limitation of studies that follow large groups of people over time and link health records to environmental data. Dr. Peter Chan, a senior researcher at the Nuffield Department of Population Health, also commented on the study from outside the research team. John Stewart, chair of the UK Noise Association, responded to the findings as well.

The broader context here is how common noise exposure is. Nearly one-third of Europeans live with chronic noise that exceeds levels considered safe by the World Health Organization. Road traffic is the biggest source of environmental noise in cities. The WHO has already ranked traffic noise as the second biggest environmental health risk in Europe, right behind air pollution.

A 3% increase in risk per 11.5 dB of noise may sound small for any one person. The significance becomes clearer when you think about whole populations. If millions of people are exposed to traffic noise, even a small increase in risk adds up to many additional cases of Parkinson's disease. That kind of calculation is what helps guide regulations and city planning.

Using Denmark's national health records is both a strength and a limitation of the study. The records cover almost the entire population, which reduces the chance of the study leaving out important groups. But Denmark has its own city layouts, traffic patterns, and types of buildings. The results may not apply the same way to other countries with different urban environments.

The finding that a quieter side of the home may be protective has a practical side. If the difference between the noisy and quiet sides of a home matters, then things like which direction a building faces, where bedrooms are placed, and how cities are designed to reduce noise could all make a difference. This could influence everything from building codes to city planning in busy areas.

What the study cannot answer is why this connection exists. It could be that noise disrupts sleep or causes long-term stress, which in turn affects the brain. Or there could be another factor at play that researchers have not yet identified. The argument about consistency across income and education levels addresses some alternative explanations, but not all of them.

More research will be needed to see whether the same connection appears in people outside Denmark, whether the risk increases steadily as noise gets louder, and whether actually reducing noise in homes can lower Parkinson's rates. For now, the study adds Parkinson's to a growing list of conditions where environmental noise may play a role, giving researchers and policymakers another reason to take traffic noise seriously.
