Cursor Cuts Its Price for India — and Excludes Its Rivals' AI Models

The India launch matters for two reasons. India is Cursor's third-largest market worldwide and has its highest concentration of heavy users. Cursor's Indian user base more than tripled in the year before July 2026. The country also has over 27 million software developers on GitHub (a popular platform where programmers share and collaborate on code), second only to the U.S., with more than two million joining in 2026 alone. OpenAI and Anthropic, two major AI companies, have both introduced India-specific pricing over the past year, so Cursor's move follows a broader trend of AI tool companies adjusting their prices for what Indian customers can afford.
Cursor is an AI-powered coding tool — software that helps programmers write, edit, and debug code by suggesting or generating it automatically. The new plan, called Cursor Start, includes access to two AI models: Composer 2.5 and Grok 4.5. Think of an AI model as the engine that powers the tool's ability to understand and generate code. Composer 2.5, launched in May 2026, is a model Cursor built itself. Grok 4.5, introduced on the Cursor blog on July 8, 2026, is described by the company as its "most intelligent model" and the first it designed for tasks beyond software engineering.
The plan also includes cloud agents (tools that write code on Cursor's servers rather than on your own computer), an iPhone app, plugins, and several other features. What it does not include is notable: no access to AI models made by OpenAI or Anthropic, and no Bugbot, Auto Mode, Automations, or the Cursor SDK (a toolkit for developers who want to build on top of Cursor). This split draws a clear line between what Cursor considers its own platform and what it reserves for higher-paying customers.
Payments for Cursor Start are handled via credit cards, debit cards, and India's Unified Payments Interface, or UPI. UPI is a widely used national payment system in India — supporting it is a practical necessity, since a large share of digital payments in the country go through it rather than through card networks. Cursor will use VPN detection and other checks to make sure the plan is available only to people actually located in India.
Simon Green, who leads Cursor's business in Asia-Pacific and Japan, said the company could bring similar pricing to other countries if the India plan succeeds. That is a conditional signal rather than a firm promise, but it suggests Cursor sees this as a model it could reuse.
The launch comes weeks before SpaceX is expected to complete its acquisition of Cursor. SpaceX is expected to buy Cursor for $60 billion in stock, as reported by TechCrunch on June 16, 2026. The timing raises the question of whether this India push was a Cursor decision made before the acquisition or one that fits with SpaceX's own plans. The available reporting does not clarify that.
The most interesting detail, in my view, is which features Cursor chose to include and exclude. By putting its own AI models (Composer 2.5 and Grok 4.5) into a $7 plan while leaving out models from OpenAI and Anthropic, Cursor is betting that its own models are good enough for most developers' daily work. That is a wager few AI coding tool companies have been willing to make so openly. If Indian developers — who include Cursor's most intensive users — find Composer and Grok sufficient without access to GPT or Claude (the leading models from OpenAI and Anthropic), it strengthens Cursor's profit margins and its bargaining power when negotiating with those model providers.
India is the obvious place to test this. Twenty-seven million developers on GitHub is a large enough group to produce reliable feedback, and the fact that Cursor's user base there tripled over the past year suggests the tool was already catching on without a price cut. Lowering the cost to ₹649 while adding UPI support removes the last barriers for a group that was already signing up quickly.
Whether this approach works in other countries depends on things the announcement does not address: how other governments regulate AI tools, how local competitors respond, and how much it actually costs Cursor to run its own models at scale. Composer 2.5's published pricing — $0.50 per million units of text input and $2.50 per million units of text output — gives a rough sense of the costs involved, but without knowing what Cursor pays to generate responses, the profit margin on a $7 plan is unclear.
What is clear is that Cursor is moving toward a setup where its own AI models, its own automation tools, and its own payment systems form a complete product — with models from other companies positioned as an optional add-on rather than something the product depends on. The India plan is the clearest sign of that direction so far.
