Google's New Tool Helps Apps Know Your Kid's Age Without Seeing Their Personal Info

Google will make a new tool called the Play Age Signals API available to Android app users around the world by the end of 2026, according to TechCrunch. Australia and Canada will get it first, by mid-August. All other countries will follow after that.
The tool lets Android app makers find out whether a user is a child or teenager so they can show age-appropriate content. The key feature: the app learns only an age range, not personal details like a date of birth. A parent can share their child's age range with apps through Google's Family Link, which is Google's existing tool for managing what kids can do on their phones. Parents have to actively turn this on by entering the information themselves. Nothing is shared automatically.
The tool was already running in Brazil before the global announcement, so Google had a real-world test. Family Link already lets parents set screen-time limits, approve app downloads, and filter content with a PIN. The age-range sharing is one more feature added to something parents were already using.
Apple launched its own age-verification tools globally in February 2026. Google's expansion brings it to roughly the same level. Both companies are taking a similar approach: the phone's operating system checks the age and passes along only the result, keeping the actual personal data away from the app that asked.
Google has been working on this for over a year in different regions and with different methods. In Europe, Google has an age-assurance tool that works with a system called Credential Manager, now available on Android. The company named Sparkasse as its first national partner for EU age assurance, connecting that solution directly to Android. Google has also made available something called zero-knowledge proof technology. This is a way to mathematically confirm an age range without ever showing the document or data behind it.
For most users, Google estimates ages on its own and sends emails to people who might be under 18. The company has publicly supported banning personalized ads aimed at users under 18. In December 2024, Google published developer guidance on building age-appropriate apps, saying it was exploring how the API could help developers confirm ages safely.
The order of the rollout matters for app developers with users around the world. Those with users in Australia and Canada need to add the tool first. Developers who already used it in Brazil will see the same setup. Those who have not started now have a clear deadline.
The opt-in design through Family Link involves a trade-off that is worth considering. It gives parents control and limits how much data gets shared, but it also means the system only works when parents actually enter their child's age. Apps that need to follow child-safety laws will get age information only for children whose parents have opted in. That leaves a gap for users whose age has not been declared. Google's own age-estimation tools try to fill some of that gap, but how well the whole system works at a large scale will depend on how many parents participate, and those numbers are not yet public.
Google appears to be building several layers: estimated age as a starting point, parental confirmation through Family Link as a stronger signal, and verified credentials through partners like Sparkasse where local laws require it. The API is the single connection point app developers use, no matter which method produced the age range.
For developers, the way they connect to the tool stays the same regardless of how the age was determined. That simplicity is the main benefit, and the global expansion means it will soon work wherever an app has users.
