ASUS Announces New Gaming Laptops and Gear to Celebrate 20 Years in Gaming
ASUS, a company known for building gaming computers, announced new gaming laptops and equipment on May 15. The announcement includes laptops with powerful new graphics chips from NVIDIA, plus new motherboards and augmented reality glasses. The company is marking 20 years of its gaming-focused division, called Republic of Gamers.
New Gaming Laptops with Top-Tier Graphics
ASUS introduced updated versions of two popular gaming laptops: the Zephyrus G14 and G16. Both are thin and light compared to older gaming laptops.
The G14 is about half an inch thick and weighs 3.5 pounds. It can be equipped with up to an RTX 5080 graphics card — that's NVIDIA's term for the visual processing chip that handles video game graphics. The G16 is slightly heavier at about 4 pounds but thinner at about 0.6 inches. It supports the most powerful option: an RTX 5090 graphics card.
Both laptops have screens that use new OLED technology, which produces deeper blacks and more vivid colors than older screens. The G14's screen refreshes 120 times per second, while the G16's refreshes 240 times per second. This matters for gaming because faster refresh rates make motion look smoother. Both screens are bright enough to use outdoors and show colors as they appear in movies.
The G14 is notable for being the first gaming laptop with an OLED screen that works with NVIDIA's G-SYNC technology, which synchronizes the screen's refresh rate with the graphics card for smoother gameplay, according to ASUS specifications.
Inside, both laptops pack a lot of memory: up to 32GB of RAM, which lets you run many programs at once without slowdowns. Storage reaches 2TB — enough space for hundreds of games or movies. Both laptops connect to the internet via WiFi 7, a faster wireless standard, and have upgraded antenna placement to improve signal strength.
To keep all this powerful hardware cool, ASUS redesigned the cooling system. The laptops use more efficient fans and heat pipes — thin tubes that carry heat away from hot components — to prevent the system from slowing down due to overheating.
A New Laptop with Two Screens Designed for AI
ASUS also announced a specialized laptop called the Zephyrus Duo. It has two screens: a main 16-inch OLED display and a smaller secondary touchscreen below it.
This laptop targets people working with artificial intelligence tools. The RTX 5090 graphics card handles gaming, but it also runs AI tasks — basically, the graphics card can do more than just display games. The laptop comes with up to 64GB of memory and 2TB of storage, which is useful for people handling large files used in AI work.
The second screen gives people more room on the desktop, so they can have AI tools open on one screen while gaming on the other.
Desktop Graphics Cards for PC Enthusiasts
ASUS announced two new desktop graphics cards: the RTX 5070 and RTX 5060 Ti. These are factory-tuned versions of NVIDIA's latest graphics chips, designed for people building powerful custom computers. Detailed specs are not yet available, but these cards are meant for enthusiasts who want maximum gaming performance.
A New Motherboard Marks 20 Years
ASUS unveiled the ROG Crosshair 2006 motherboard to commemorate two decades of its gaming brand. A motherboard is the circuit board that connects all your computer's parts together. This new board is designed to work with current AMD processors and includes premium components and extra connection ports for accessories.
ASUS also announced the ROG NUC 16, a small gaming computer designed for people who want power without taking up much space. Full details haven't been released yet.
AR Glasses for Gaming
ASUS's ROG XREAL R1 augmented reality glasses are now available worldwide. These are special glasses that project game images onto a transparent display in front of your eyes, instead of using a monitor. They're designed for portable gaming, though they're still niche products because there aren't many games made specifically for them yet, and battery life is limited.
What This Means
The broader pattern here is straightforward: gaming hardware keeps getting more powerful, and manufacturers keep fitting more processing power into thin, portable devices. ASUS's refresh shows that the entire industry is moving toward next-generation graphics chips while sticking with designs that already work.
One notable shift worth flagging: gaming laptops are increasingly serving double duty. The Zephyrus Duo, with its second screen and high memory, suggests that people buying high-end gaming laptops also use them for AI work, content creation, and other demanding tasks. This isn't entirely new — graphics cards have been used for more than gaming for years — but it's becoming more intentional in how laptop makers design their products.
The real test is whether all this new hardware performs well in real-world use. Packing a powerful RTX 5090 graphics card into a thin laptop is ambitious because the hardware generates significant heat. ASUS has upgraded its cooling system to handle this, but how well it actually works will depend on the details of the design and whether the system stays cool during long gaming sessions.
One practical consideration: ASUS hasn't announced pricing or when most of these products will be available for purchase. The RTX 5090 laptops will be expensive, so they'll probably appeal mainly to professional users and enthusiasts willing to spend top dollar for the best mobile performance. Typical gamers may find the lower-end options — like those with RTX 5070 graphics — more relevant.
ASUS is also expanding beyond hardware alone, partnering with retailers to offer creative workspaces and lifestyle products. This suggests the company sees an opportunity to capture revenue not just from selling equipment, but from helping people set up and use their gaming and creative tools.
