Two people in Michigan have died from an illness called cyclosporiasis, the state health department announced on August 3, 2026. This is the largest outbreak of the illness ever recorded in the United States, and these are the first deaths tied to it.

Both people who died had other serious health problems before they got sick. Their medical records show that cyclosporiasis and dehydration — losing too much water from the body — may have made those conditions worse. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services posted information about the deaths on its infectious disease outbreak page.

How the Outbreak Grew

The outbreak has grown very quickly. Michigan's case count stood at 11,234 as of August 3, up 461 from July 31, when the state reported 10,773 cases. Hospitalizations stayed at 193 across both dates.

The numbers have climbed fast. On June 30, Michigan had just over 170 cases with no known cause. By July 4, that number had risen to 572. By July 13, the state was investigating 2,640 cases.

Wayne County had the most infections of any area, with 1,379 cases. Adults aged 30 to 39 were hit the hardest, making up 2,216 of the reported cases across the state.

The National Picture

The outbreak reaches beyond Michigan. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recorded 6,707 confirmed cases as of July 28, plus more than 11,500 additional suspected cases still being checked. The CDC confirmed it knows about the two Michigan deaths. The outbreak spans at least nine states, according to the FDA.

An FDA investigation linked the outbreak to iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms, a company that operates in central Mexico. Earlier, on July 5, Michigan health officials had not yet identified a specific grower or supplier. At that point, the largest increases in cases were in Southeast Michigan. A group of cases across Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky included more than 400 infections on its own.

The US Department of Health and Human Services said it was aware of the Michigan deaths. The CDC also confirmed it knew about the fatalities. Michigan's state health department told Reuters in an email that there were no updates on the investigation into the deaths specifically.

Why the Numbers Lag Behind

The broader context here matters for understanding why the official numbers may not capture the full scope of the outbreak. Cyclospora cayetanensis, the parasite that causes the illness, naturally lives in many farming regions and has been linked to fresh produce brought into the United States before. The parasite takes about a week after exposure to make someone sick. After that, there are more delays: the person has to go to a doctor, get tested, and have the result reported to health officials. By the time a case shows up in the numbers, many more people may already be infected but not yet counted.

The gap between Michigan's 11,234 reported cases and the CDC's 6,707 confirmed national total comes down to different rules for what counts as a case, different reporting schedules, and a backlog of suspected cases still being reviewed.

Why Finding the Source Is So Hard

The identification of Taylor Farms' iceberg lettuce from central Mexico as the source — while the outbreak kept growing — reveals a key challenge with outbreaks tied to fresh produce. By the time investigators trace the illness back to a specific food, that food may have already been eaten or thrown away. Lettuce goes bad quickly, so unlike a product that can be pulled from store shelves, contaminated lettuce that arrived at a restaurant or home weeks ago is long gone.

For health authorities, the two deaths add urgency to the response. Cyclosporiasis can be treated with antibiotics, but severe dehydration can make outcomes worse for people who already have weakened immune systems or other serious health conditions. The fact that most cases are in adults aged 30 to 39 fits with patterns seen in outbreaks tied to restaurants, where working-age adults make up a large share of customers.
