Why Did 15 Elephants Die Near a Kenyan National Park?

Between 24 June and 24 July 2026, fifteen elephants were found dead in southern Kenya, just outside Amboseli National Park. The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and several news outlets think the elephants may have been poisoned by eating pesticides used on nearby tomato farms.
KWS said last week that some of the dead elephants showed signs of partial paralysis — when parts of the body stop working properly. That symptom points to cyanide, a harmful chemical found in some pesticides. Preliminary tests found a possible toxic substance connected to the deaths, as Reuters reported on 29 July. The Guardian and BBC News, reporting on 30 July, both named pesticides on tomato farms as the likely cause.
The tomato farms in question are in an area called Kimana, in southern Kenya. Kimana lies along a route that elephants use to walk between two national parks — Amboseli and Tsavo. Think of it as a natural highway for wildlife. These farms grow tomatoes using water from streams flowing down from nearby Mount Kilimanjaro, and they sell their produce to markets in Nairobi and beyond. The wider Amboseli area is home to more than 2,000 elephants, according to BBC News.
Not everyone agrees that pesticides tell the whole story. Conservationists quoted by the BBC expressed doubt that pesticides alone caused the deaths. Local farmers were skeptical too. Daniel Nina, who represents some landowners in the region, told the BBC that residents have lived alongside wildlife for decades and have never seen elephant deaths like this before.
The broader context here is a long-standing tension between farming and wildlife in southern Kenya. When farms with water and tasty crops spread into the paths elephants use to travel, contact between elephants and farm chemicals becomes likely. Cyanide-based pesticides are cheap and easy to find in parts of East Africa. They have been linked to wildlife poisoning elsewhere on the continent, though usually in cases where someone poisoned animals on purpose rather than animals accidentally eating something harmful.
What makes this case stand out is the scale. Fifteen elephants dead in one month in a small area is a major event by conservation standards. The partial paralysis seen by KWS fits how cyanide works: it stops cells in the body from producing energy, which can quickly affect the nervous system. Whether the elephants ate contaminated tomatoes directly or were exposed another way — such as through contaminated water — is still an open question.
The doubts from local residents matter. If people here have farmed alongside elephant routes for decades without anything like this happening, then a simple accident doesn't fully explain what changed. Maybe the type of pesticide changed, or the way farmers applied it. Maybe drought pushed elephants into new areas. Or maybe there is a source of contamination no one has found yet. None of these ideas can be confirmed from what's been reported, but they likely shape the questions investigators are asking.
For the Amboseli ecosystem, the stakes go beyond the fifteen elephants that died. A population of about 2,000 elephants losing fifteen in one month is a real loss, especially if the cause is ongoing rather than a one-time event. If pesticides in a shared wildlife route turn out to be the cause, it could affect how Kenya regulates farming near protected areas and whether the current model of letting farms and wildlife exist side by side can continue.
KWS has not yet released final lab results. The early findings point toward cyanide-based pesticides, but no independent lab has publicly confirmed this. Until those results come in, pesticides remain the leading theory, not a proven cause.
