eBay Had a Great Quarter, and Live Shopping Is a Big Reason Why

eBay reported second-quarter 2026 revenue of $3.1 billion on August 5, 2026. The total value of everything sold on the platform, called gross merchandise volume or GMV, was $22.4 billion. The biggest news: eBay Live, the company's live video shopping feature, saw its sales jump roughly eight times compared to the same quarter last year, across seven countries (TechCrunch). The company did not disclose the exact GMV figure for eBay Live. Overall GMV rose 15% year-over-year for the quarter (Lufkin Daily News). eBay forecast next-quarter revenue between $3.07 billion and $3.12 billion, above what analysts expected (Reuters).

What Is eBay Live?

Live shopping is exactly what it sounds like: a seller hosts a live video stream, shows off products, and shoppers can buy in real time. Think of it as a home shopping channel, but interactive and on your phone or computer. CEO Jamie Iannone's company has been building this feature since its 2022 U.S. launch, which started as invite-only. International rollout began with a UK test in 2024, followed by Germany, Australia, France, Italy, and Canada. eBay has since opened it up so that eligible sellers can sign up on their own across more than 300 product categories (TechCrunch). More international expansion is planned for the coming weeks and months.

The Numbers Behind eBay Live

The internal metrics are striking. Over 90% of sellers who stream regularly on eBay Live have seen their sales grow. Sellers using eBay Live sell approximately three times more than sellers who do not. First-time shoppers in the collectibles category spend around 70% more than shoppers who do not use Live. None of these figures were accompanied by absolute baseline numbers, making it hard to know the true scale of the opportunity. But the proportional lift lines up with what live commerce has produced in markets where the format is more established.

For context, eBay's Q2 2025 revenue stood at $2.7 billion (up 6% as-reported, 4% when adjusting for currency changes) with GMV of $19.5 billion (eBay Investor Relations). The jump to $3.1 billion in revenue and $22.4 billion in GMV for Q2 2026 reflects meaningful acceleration. The company also beat analyst estimates of $2.64 billion in Q2 2025 (Reuters), and has now forecast above-estimate revenue for three consecutive quarters, having guided Q2 2026 revenue to a range of $2.97 billion to $3.03 billion in April (Reuters), which it exceeded.

Where This Idea Came From

Live shopping is not new globally. The format has generated enormous sales in Chinese e-commerce for years, powered by platforms like Taobao Live and Douyin. Western markets have been slower to adopt, with Amazon Live, TikTok Shop, and others experimenting with varying degrees of success. eBay's approach differs in one important respect: rather than building a general-purpose live shopping surface, it is focusing on product categories where the platform already has deep inventory and motivated buyers, particularly collectibles and high-value items. The collectibles data point, where first-time Live shoppers spend 70% more, suggests the format works especially well in categories where questions of authenticity, provenance, and real-time bidding create genuine value for buyers beyond what a regular listing page provides.

The company has been backing this with real-world events. eBay's presence at the National Sports Collectors Convention featured over 60 eBay Live streams, athlete appearances, premium collectibles, and immersive fan experiences (eBay Inc.). A separate content initiative, "Showdown: 7s v 10s," pairs well-known athletes like Landon Donovan and Jack Wilshere with curated collectibles. The Late Show with Stephen Colbert partnered with eBay for Charity to auction memorabilia from the Ed Sullivan Theater, raising more than $2 million for World Central Kitchen. eBay has also committed $100,000 in 2026 Up & Running Grants to support 10 sellers in becoming eBay Live success stories.

Other eBay News

Two other corporate developments surfaced alongside the earnings release. eBay completed its acquisition of Depop, a fashion resale marketplace popular with Gen Z and Millennial buyers, on July 30, 2026. The company also reached an agreement with Ina and David Steiner on July 28, 2026, relating to the 2019 misconduct by former eBay employees. Both items were disclosed in eBay's August 5 news roundup (eBay Inc.).

The Steiner matter closes a chapter that has hung over eBay's reputation, and the Depop acquisition broadens the marketplace's reach into younger, fashion-conscious buyers. Neither directly relates to the live shopping push, but both are part of a broader strategy under Iannone to round out eBay's product categories and audience reach while investing in formats that help sellers sell more.

The Big Question

The key question for the coming quarters is whether the 8x growth rate in eBay Live reflects genuine adoption or simply a low starting point. Eightfold growth from a small number is still a small number, and eBay's decision not to disclose the absolute figure leaves that question open. What is less ambiguous is the seller economics. A 3x lift in sales for participating sellers, combined with 90%+ reporting growth, suggests that for sellers who commit to the format, the returns are real. The challenge eBay faces is the same one every live commerce platform in Western markets has faced: getting beyond enthusiastic early adopters to a broad base of sellers willing to invest the time and effort that streaming requires.

eBay operates in 180 countries (eBay Inc.), and the planned international expansion of eBay Live will test whether the collectibles-focused approach that worked in seven markets translates more broadly. If the proportional lifts hold, live shopping could become a meaningful contributor to GMV growth. If they shrink as the base grows, eBay will need to show that the format has lasting, structural value rather than novelty-driven engagement.

The company also named Trosort the Global Winner of the Circular Fashion Fund 2026, with the opportunity to receive a US$300,000 investment from eBay Ventures, and published its 2025 Impact Report on May 21, 2026, alongside an eBay for Charity 2025 in Review summary on May 18. These sit alongside the live shopping push as part of eBay's broader positioning around sustainability, community, and circular commerce.

The numbers are moving in the right direction. The Q2 2026 results and the above-estimate forward guidance give eBay room to keep investing in the format. Whether live shopping becomes a lasting pillar of the marketplace or a high-growth niche within it will depend on what happens when the low-base advantage fades.
