Trains Stopped Across Northern England After Power Fails at Manchester Control Centre

A power cut at a train control centre in Manchester brought train services across north-west England, the Midlands, and parts of Wales to a halt shortly before 2pm on Thursday, 6 August 2026. Network Rail warned that the disruption would last through the rest of the day.
The power went out at a facility in Greater Manchester that acts like a giant traffic light system for trains. Signalling is the system that tells train drivers when it is safe to move, which track to use, and when to stop. The Manchester Rail Operating Centre is one of Network Rail's most important control hubs. Network Rail had finished a round of upgrades to the West Coast Main Line in spring and early summer 2026, improving tracks, overhead lines, and signalling along the route. It has not been confirmed whether those upgrades involved the specific equipment controlled by the Manchester centre.
The broader context here is that putting so much control into a few large centres makes the network more efficient but also more vulnerable.
