This was not the first such attack in Thailand this year. In February 2026, a 17-year-old used a gun stolen from a police officer to shoot teacher Sasiphat Sinsamosorn at Patongprathankirkiriwat School in Hat Yai district, in southern Thailand. Two student-on-teacher shootings in six months suggests these are not isolated events but signs of deeper problems. Both involved students carrying guns on school grounds. In Hat Yai, the weapon was stolen from a police officer, raising questions about how officers store their guns and who is responsible when one goes missing. In Bang Kruai, investigators still need to find out how the student got the gun, whether it was legally registered, and whether anyone noticed warning signs beforehand.

Thai education officials have responded to past school violence with official orders and expressions of sympathy. After a 2022 incident in which a gunman shot children, teachers, and parents, Deputy Education Minister Khunying Kalaya told schools to strictly enforce child safety and raised concerns about the drug situation. The broader picture is that violence against teachers in Thailand goes beyond these mass shootings. The Yarang district case, where a teacher was shot as students were heading home, shows that school staff face both personal and targeted violence. The key question now is whether the Bang Kruai shooting will lead to real changes in school security, how minors get firearms, and mental health support in Thai schools. The Ministry of Education has issued safety orders before and has raised concerns about drugs, so officials seem aware of the dangers. What we do not know yet is whether those orders were followed with enough seriousness to stop the next attack.
