A firefighting helicopter carrying two people crashed on Friday morning in central Utah near a wildfire called the Widemouth 2 fire. Federal aviation authorities confirmed the crash. The impact of the crash started a new fire right at the site, which has stopped rescuers from getting to the wreckage. The condition of the two people onboard is still unknown.

Emergency crews responded near Richfield, Utah, about 160 miles south of Salt Lake City. Tyler Hecht, a deputy incident commander with the Great Basin incident management team, said rescuers had not yet reached the crash scene. One reason is that the crash itself started a second fire. He described the terrain as "very difficult" (The Guardian).

The US Forest Service initially declined to comment on how the two passengers were doing. In a statement, the agency asked the public for "patience while we focus on response efforts."

The helicopter went down near the Widemouth 2 fire, a blaze started by lightning that had burned through 105,000 acres since it began on July 27. That fire is one of eight large fires currently burning across Utah. Together, those eight fires have burned more than 331,000 acres, according to state fire data.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox acknowledged the crash in a social media post, writing that "wildland firefighting is among the most dangerous jobs in the world."

Two federal agencies are investigating: the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which oversees aviation safety, and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which investigates transportation accidents. The helicopter involved is a Sikorsky S64, a large heavy-lift helicopter commonly used in aerial firefighting across the western United States to drop water and fire retardant on big wildfires. What caused the crash has not been disclosed.

The broader context here is that Utah is in the middle of one of its most active wildfire seasons in recent years. With eight large fires burning at the same time, there is heavy demand on a limited number of firefighting aircraft and helicopters. Each aircraft needs maintenance, rested crews, and coordination across multiple teams. Losing even one helicopter puts more strain on the system, potentially forcing commanders to pull aircraft from one fire to cover another and leaving fewer options for the crews on the ground.

The fact that the crash itself started a new fire makes things even harder. Responders now have a second fire to deal with in terrain that is already tough to navigate. This could delay both the rescue effort and the investigation. Crash investigations normally require keeping the wreckage in place, documenting how the aircraft hit the ground, and recovering any flight data — all of which are difficult or impossible when the site is on fire or unreachable.

The Widemouth 2 fire was started by lightning and had already been burning for nearly two weeks. With 105,000 acres burned and the fire still going, sending in large helicopters like the S64 is standard practice for fighting big wildfires, especially in areas where ground crews cannot easily reach.

The investigation by the FAA and NTSB will likely look at the helicopter's flight path, maintenance records, pilot communications, and weather and visibility conditions at the time of the crash. These types of investigations usually take months to a year or more before officials determine a probable cause.
