The National Party released its full candidate list for the 2026 General Election on 8 August 2026. It came at the end of a week where leader and Prime Minister Christopher Luxon was criticised on several fronts. RNZ

The announcement comes at a busy point in the election cycle. Nomination day is noon on Thursday 8 October. That is the deadline for parties to formally submit their candidates. Several candidacy decisions were already known before the full list came out. Nicola Willis was confirmed as a List-Only candidate. The party has also picked new local candidates in Auckland. They include Agnes Loheni in Waitākere and Ghouse Majeed in Manurewa, among four new Auckland selections. Sitting MP Mark Mitchell holds Whangaparāoa and serves as Minister of Corrections, Minister for Emergency Management and Recovery, and Minister of Police. The list release came at the end of a rough week for Luxon. He started the week apologising to small businesses in Rotorua. He was criticised for not disciplining Foreign Minister Winston Peters, for an impromptu call for a referendum on MMP, and for his use of Defence Force planes. RNZ

A Taxpayers' Union Curia poll predicted the coalition would return to power and showed a significant drop in support for opposition parties. RNZ

The broader context here is that the candidate list is a test of how united the party is heading into the campaign. Willis and Brownlee being List-Only matters because both are senior government figures. Not being tied to a single local seat frees them to campaign across the whole country. The departures of Bayly from Port Waikato and Pugh from Parliament left gaps the party has been filling with its new Auckland candidates and others. For political journalists watching from the Press Gallery, the list coming out at the same time as Luxon's stumbles over Peters, the MMP referendum call, and Defence Force planes means the party machine is now fully in campaign mode while the leader is taking hits from several directions. The Curia poll suggesting a coalition return, if it holds up on election day, would give Luxon room to weather that criticism. But the same poll showing opposition support dropping does not fix the internal management questions raised during the week.
