OpenAI Buys a Startup That Turns Text Into Presentations
OpenAI has acquired NextSlide, a startup that built an AI tool for creating polished, editable slide decks from prompts, notes, documents, or research. The NextSlide team is now working on ChatGPT at OpenAI, according to TechCrunch. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The deal actually closed earlier in 2026. NextSlide founder Ahmed Beshry said in a LinkedIn note that the public announcement was coming "a few months late" and that the deal took place "earlier this year." The delay between closing and disclosure is not unusual when a company is mainly buying a team rather than a product. In these cases, the acquiring company prioritizes integrating the new staff and shutting down the standalone product before making the transaction public.
NextSlide's product, as described on the company's website, could accept prompts, notes, documents, or research as input and produce a finished, editable presentation. ChatGPT already has some ability to generate documents and text-based content, but purpose-built tools like NextSlide have typically produced more structured, better-designed output. Bringing in a team that has worked specifically on the presentation problem suggests OpenAI is investing in improving that capability rather than relying on its general-purpose AI alone.
Ahmed Beshry's track record includes co-founding Caper AI, a smart cart and cashier-less checkout startup that Instacart acquired in 2021 (TechCrunch). Caper built camera- and sensor-based systems for retail checkout. The shift from physical retail technology to AI productivity software is a meaningful one. Beshry's experience building and selling a complex product to a larger company twice over is the kind of background that buyers look for in these deals.
The broader context here is that OpenAI has been steadily bringing in small teams with specialized product expertise. Presentations are a particularly tricky output for AI because slides require a clear structure: a hierarchy of headings, visual balance, and logical flow from one slide to the next. Raw text generation does not naturally produce those qualities. A team that has spent time solving those specific problems brings knowledge that is hard to replicate, even with a strong underlying AI model.
What this means for ChatGPT's competitive position depends on execution. The field of AI-powered productivity tools has become crowded, with Google's Gemini integrating into its Workspace apps and Microsoft's Copilot embedded across Office. If the NextSlide team's work leads to noticeably better presentation generation inside ChatGPT, it narrows a gap that dedicated tools and rival platforms have been working on. If it does not, the acquisition amounts to hiring talented people with limited visible product impact.
One detail worth noting is that NextSlide's website now displays Beshry's farewell note rather than a functioning product. The standalone service is effectively shut down. Users who adopted NextSlide on their own will need to look for similar features elsewhere, likely within ChatGPT itself as the team's work surfaces there, though no timeline for that has been stated.
For OpenAI, the transaction fits a pattern of targeting founders who have built a product from scratch and seen it through to acquisition. Beshry has now done that twice, in two quite different technology areas. The specific contributions the NextSlide team will make to ChatGPT have not been detailed publicly beyond confirming they are working on the product.
The acquisition does not fundamentally reshape OpenAI's competitive landscape on its own. It is a targeted, incremental move. But it does signal where OpenAI sees room to improve ChatGPT's usefulness for a concrete task that matters to professional users.
