A Firefighting Helicopter Crashed in Utah. Here's What Happened.

A firefighting helicopter working for the US Forest Service crashed on the morning of August 7, 2026, near a large wildfire in central Utah. Both people on board were killed, and the crash itself started a new fire at the site, making it harder for rescue teams to reach the wreckage. The Federal Aviation Administration said the helicopter went down around 10 a.m. local time near Richfield, Utah, about 160 miles south of Salt Lake City, close to the edges of a wildfire called the Widemouth 2 fire (The Salt Lake Tribune).

The US National Interagency Fire Center confirmed that the helicopter's pilot and one crewmember died in the crash. Two people were aboard the aircraft (Fox 13 Now). The US Forest Service would not formally confirm the status of the two people on board, saying there were false reports and rumors spreading right after the crash. A local official had earlier said the two people likely did not survive (ABC4).

The crash started a new fire right at the accident site, which is inside the area already burning from the Widemouth 2 fire. The Forest Service said ground teams tried to respond right away but could not reach the scene because of the new fire. The team in charge decided it would not send more people into danger until the area was safe to enter (The Guardian).

Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board, the federal agency that looks into airplane and helicopter accidents, were on their way to Richfield as of Friday to document the crash scene before anyone tried to move the aircraft. But the fire, the remote location, and the need to keep the scene intact for the investigation all create a difficult situation. Recovery and investigation cannot move forward safely until the fire near the crash site is brought under control.

The Widemouth 2 fire was started by lightning in late July and has grown quickly since then. As of Saturday, August 8, it had burned more than 114,600 acres (46,400 hectares) and was 24% contained. Containment means firefighters have secured about a quarter of the fire's outer edge so it cannot spread further in those areas. That was up from 19% on Friday, when the fire was measured at over 105,000 acres. At the time of the crash, 632 people were working on the fire (The Guardian; ABC4).

In a separate incident, a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter carried two sick firefighters off a mountain near Birdseye along Highway 89 in Utah County, a reminder of the physical strain that long wildfire operations place on the people working across multiple fire zones (ABC4).

This crash follows a deadly June 2026 incident in which three firefighters died fighting a fire along the Colorado-Utah border, with a fourth firefighter later dying from burn injuries suffered during that same response. Together, these losses point to the growing danger of the 2026 western fire season, where lightning-sparked fires in hard-to-reach areas have pushed both air and ground crews into increasingly risky conditions (The Guardian).

The broader context here is one of growing strain on firefighting operations. The helicopter involved, a Sikorsky S-64, is a large aircraft commonly used in firefighting because it can carry and drop large amounts of water. These helicopters fly low and close to active fires, often in poor visibility and bumpy air. When a crash happens in an area that is already burning, the problems pile up: the crash site becomes both a place where aviation investigators need to work and an active fire zone where firefighters need to operate, and each has different safety rules and priorities. The Forest Service's choice to keep ground teams away from the wreckage follows a longstanding principle in wildland firefighting: human life comes first, ahead of equipment or recovery, even when there is pressure to reach missing personnel.

The investigation will look at the usual factors in helicopter accidents: mechanical problems, whether the pilot became disoriented (lost their sense of which way is up or where the ground is, which can happen in thick smoke), weather conditions at the time of the flight, and the decisions that put the aircraft in that specific situation. Because the crash itself started a new fire, investigators will also need to figure out the exact order of events from impact to ignition, a task made harder by the ongoing fire that may damage or destroy evidence before they can document it.
