Arsenal Chase Defensive Reinforcements as Saliba and Timber Face Extended Sidelined Spells
Arsenal are accelerating their search for a new centre-back after William Saliba was ruled out for an extended period with a back injury and Jurriën Timber was declared "weeks away" from a return to competitive action by manager Mikel Arteta.
Saliba broke down during the World Cup with a back problem that has affected him since last season. Arsenal released a statement confirming the defender "has suffered a back injury which will require a period of rehabilitation" (Metro). Arteta said Saliba is in "rest mode for two weeks" after aggravating the injury and that it will take time to heal. Timber, meanwhile, pulled out of the Netherlands squad on the eve of the World Cup after failing to recover from a persistent groin injury that saw him miss most of the run-in last season. Arteta said the Dutchman is "progressing well" and is "on the pitch doing quite a lot," but is still not close to a return (The Guardian).
The defensive shortage was laid bare on Sunday, when Borussia Dortmund beat Arsenal 3-2 to lift the Emirates Cup in a match featuring several defensive mistakes. With Saliba and Timber unavailable, Arteta started Cristhian Mosquera alongside Gabriel Magalhães in central defence. Arsenal's first-choice back four — Timber, Gabriel, Saliba and Riccardo Calafiori — was nowhere to be seen.
Arteta said his existing players must "get up to speed" before next week's Community Shield meeting with Manchester City and did not rule out bringing in another defender. That admission will intensify the focus on Arsenal's transfer activity in the final weeks of the window.
The club had a bid for Aston Villa's Ezri Konsa rejected earlier this summer and are expected to return with a new offer. Villa value the England international, who can also play at right-back, at £60 million. But with less than two years left on Konsa's contract, Arsenal are unwilling to meet that asking price for a 28-year-old (The Guardian).
Arsenal have also shown interest in Cristian Romero, but a move for the Tottenham defender is extremely unlikely given Spurs' reluctance to sell to their north London rivals.
For Saliba, it is the latest setback in a frustrating pattern. The centre-back — a key figure in Arsenal's set-piece routines, where he disrupts goalkeepers at corners and free kicks — missed the final game of the 2024/25 season after ankle surgery and sat out several matches last December with a knock. This back issue, though, could keep him out for far longer.
Arsenal face Manchester City in the Community Shield next weekend. Whatever happens in the transfer market before then, Arteta knows he will be working with a patched-up defence.
