BBC Doubles Free Live Coverage as Cymru Premier Expands to 16 Clubs
BBC Cymru Wales has agreed a three-year deal to broadcast live Cymru Premier matches, doubling the number of free-to-air fixtures available to viewers compared with last season. The partnership, struck with the Football Association of Wales, gives Welsh domestic football its widest free viewing reach in years.
The timing is no accident. Wales' top-tier league, formed in 1992, heads into its 35th edition with a revamped format: 16 clubs instead of 12, and games shifting predominantly to Friday evenings. Six promoted teams fill the expanded slots: Llandudno, Airbus UK, Holywell Town, Trefelin BGC, Cambrian United and Ammanford all step up for the 2026-27 season BBC Sport.
The title sponsor is Novira, and every match streams live on Cymru Football TV, the league's own platform. Free-to-air coverage picks up selected fixtures across S4C, BBC iPlayer and Sgorio's YouTube channel. Commentary comes in both English and Welsh, reflecting a league that serves bilingual communities from the north coast to the Amman valley.
For fans, the changes add up to more football, more often, in more places.
S4C renewed its own three-year commitment in late July, with its long-running Sgorio programme continuing as a broadcast partner. The BBC deal layers on top of that, meaning two major broadcasters now carry the Novira Cymru Premier for free. Jack Sharp, the FAW's head of domestic leagues, said the BBC partnership would grow the league's profile through increased free-to-air coverage.
Six new clubs. Friday-night fixtures. Two free broadcasters. A league that began in 1992 as a bid to give Welsh clubs a domestic stage of their own is stretching out, making room, and opening the curtains wider than before.
