Matthew McConaughey's Five-Year Screen Hiatus Ends With an Indie Honey Thriller
Matthew McConaughey spent five years away from live-action film roles. The movie that drew him back is not a studio blockbuster but an independent crime thriller shot in 2023 and set among beekeepers in rural Oklahoma — The Rivals of Amziah King, directed by Andrew Patterson (The Hollywood Reporter).
Patterson is the film-maker behind the 2019 debut The Vast of Night, a low-budget science-fiction piece that built a strong critical following. Amziah King is his second feature. The idea grew partly from a personal connection: one of Patterson's closest friends owns a honey plant, and that world became the film's backbone (The Hollywood Reporter). He also said he wanted to make a movie in which a Native American woman takes over the narrative and becomes the protagonist.
McConaughey was not initially available. Patterson sent the script anyway, and the actor agreed to come aboard after reading it (The Hollywood Reporter). The casting was announced at the Cannes film festival in May 2023 (The Hollywood Reporter).
In the film, McConaughey plays Amziah King — a honeymaker, born-again Christian and bluegrass musician. Angelina LookingGlass plays Kateri, a young woman who lived with Amziah as his foster daughter for several years. The story follows their reunion and the trouble that follows. Kurt Russell also appears in the cast, per the official SXSW 2025 festival schedule (SXSW). The Rivals of Amziah King premiered at South by Southwest in the spring of 2025, programmed as a Platinum screening — one of the Austin festival's top tiers (SXSW). Since then, the question has been who would put it into theatres. Black Bear Pictures, the production company behind the film, has been building a US theatrical distribution operation and was weighing whether to handle the domestic release itself (the United States and Canada, in industry terms). By August 2025, Black Bear was reportedly working on a plan to release the film into US theatres (Deadline; Screen Daily).
For McConaughey, a Texas native who spent his break writing several books, the return to acting came through a character part rather than a marquee-hero part. An apiarist who plays bluegrass and finds God is not the obvious vehicle for a comeback. That is precisely what makes the choice worth noting: the actor who once chased blockbusters came back on his own terms, inside somebody else's small, specific vision.
