Jon Hamm Stars as a Real-Life Radio Reporter Held Captive on Air in MGM+'s 'American Hostage'
Jon Hamm picks up a microphone and a nightmare in the first trailer for American Hostage, an eight-episode psychological thriller arriving on MGM+ on 20 September.
Hamm plays Fred Heckman, a real-life Indianapolis radio reporter for WIBC whose popular call-in news programme becomes the stage for a siege in 1977. The hostage taker, Tony Kiritsis, demands to be interviewed live on Heckman's show — and rings in to announce he has a 12-gauge shotgun aimed at a man's neck. Giovanni Ribisi plays Kiritsis. Hamm reprises the role of Heckman from the narrative podcast of the same name, bringing the audio drama's premise to television. MGM+ released the official trailer, key art and new images on 10 August 2026 (Amazon MGM Studios press release). The network first announced a Fall 2026 premiere window back in May, when it offered a first look at Hamm in character (The Futon Critic). The series is structured as an anthology, meaning each season could tackle a different real-life hostage story.
The eight-episode run will culminate with a finale on 1 November. That gives viewers roughly six weeks inside the longest live-radio hostage crisis in American history — a story where the reporter became part of the story, and the only way out was to keep broadcasting.
