Reggie Bannister, Phantasm's Ice Cream Man Turned Action Hero, Dies at 80
Reggie Bannister, the actor who turned a supporting role in a low-budget horror film into a decades-long career as one of the genre's most beloved heroes, has died at the age of 80.
Bannister died on the morning of Sunday, 9 August 2026, at his home in Crestline, California, according to The Hollywood Reporter. His wife, Gigi Bannister, confirmed the news to TMZ.
Born Reginald Horace Bannister on 9 September 1945 in Long Beach, California, he became known worldwide for his starring role across the Phantasm franchise — a series of four action-horror films, Phantasm I–IV, created by writer-director Don Coscarelli. In a twist unusual even for cult cinema, Bannister played a fictionalised version of himself: a character named Reggie, an ice cream vendor who transforms into a shotgun-wielding action hero battling a supernatural grave robber known as the Tall Man.
He was also a musician, and his path to the role was anything but conventional. Before Phantasm debuted in 1979, Bannister had served in the United States military during the Vietnam War. His wife told TMZ that during his service he was exposed to Agent Orange, the chemical defoliant used by the U.S. military in Vietnam — exposure that has been linked to a range of long-term health conditions in veterans.
Gigi Bannister said her husband had battled Lewy body dementia and Parkinson's disease. He was first diagnosed in June 2016, according to a Facebook post by Don Coscarelli published in February 2025. At that time, Coscarelli shared that Bannister was in at-home hospice care, surrounded by loved ones, and in good spirits.
It had been Bannister's wish to spend his illness at home with his family in their mountain cabin, as reported by Rue Morgue in February 2025. Coscarelli, who maintained a close friendship with Bannister throughout the illness, provided updates to fans through the official Phantasm.com website.
For fans of the franchise, Bannister's death closes a chapter that began nearly five decades ago. The Phantasm films, made on modest budgets across multiple decades, built a fiercely loyal following. Bannister was central to that loyalty — not as a polished leading man, but as a character who felt like someone you might actually know, handed a weapon and asked to save the world.
He is survived by his wife, Gigi.
