Lucy Liu Joins Sci-Fi Short 'Reset' as Executive Producer, with Feature Adaptation in Development

Lucy Liu has boarded the sci-fi dramedy short film Reset as executive producer, signing on to the project from production company SPL Max alongside writer-directors Celine Tien and Jerry Hsu. The Hollywood Reporter exclusively premiered the film's official teaser trailer on 11 August 2026, confirming that Liu will executive produce both the short and a feature-length adaptation currently in active development (The Hollywood Reporter).

Reset is set in a near-future society where citizens are physically reset to six years old at the age of 65. The story follows a young woman who must care for her newly reset mother and find her estranged father before the state intervenes. Tien and Hsu drew on their own families' experiences with inherited trauma, framing intergenerational cycles through the lenses of karma and the psychology of empathy.

The short stars Olivia Liang and Sam Song Li. Julien Soros produced, with cinematography by Charles Xiuzhi Dong. The executive producer roster runs wide: Branton Choi (formerly of AGBO, the production company founded by the Russo brothers), Eva Li Hsieh, Care.com founder Sheila Marcelo, Trip.com founder James Liang, and Adam Marcelo.

Reset had its world premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival — a Montreal-based genre festival that has become a significant launchpad for international horror, sci-fi, and arthouse genre work. There it won the Silver Audience Award for best international short film, a prize voted on by festival audiences rather than a jury panel.

The jump from a prize-winning festival short to a feature in active development is a familiar path in the independent film world. A short functions as a proof of concept — a calling card that shows financiers and producers what a feature version could look like. Liu's involvement on both the short and the feature adds industry weight at a stage when a project is still assembling its path to a full production.
