Maria Fernanda Cândido Stars in Luiz Fernando Carvalho's 'Lost Objects' as Cameras Roll
Maria Fernanda Cândido is set to star in Lost Objects (Objetos Perdidos), a new film from director Luiz Fernando Carvalho that has already begun production, according to Variety.
Carvalho, who also wrote the original screenplay, describes the film's genre as "chemical fiction" — his own coinage for what he calls a modern fable about love. Variety characterises it as "a modern dystopian fable." The cast also includes André Frateschi, Marcela Vivan Russo, and Maurice Durozier. Academia de Filmes, part of the INK Studios ecosystem, is producing.
The project reunites Cândido and Carvalho three years after their collaboration on The Passion According to G.H., an adaptation of the novel by Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector. Cândido describes the two films as a "diptych" — a pair of works meant to be considered together.
Cândido's profile has risen sharply on the international stage. She drew wide attention for a key role in Kleber Mendonça Filho's The Secret Agent, which earned an Oscar nomination. Her earlier credits include Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore and Marco Bellocchio's The Traitor. She is married to screenwriter Luiz Bolognesi, a detail Variety first noted in 2008.
The announcement lands the day before the Gramado Film Festival opens its 2026 edition on 12 August. This year's festival, running through 22 August, will hand out two Crystal Kikito (Kikito de Cristal) honours for the first time — one to Cândido and one to Selton Mello. The Crystal Kikito is Gramado's career-achievement award, recognising contributions to Brazilian cinema.
For Cândido, the timing stitches the recognition to fresh momentum. A festival tribute in one week, a new production already rolling the next — and an international audience that has been watching since The Secret Agent put her on the awards map.
No release date for Lost Objects has been announced.
