Brandy to Sing Theme Song for Netflix's 'A Different World' Sequel Series
Brandy will record the theme song for Netflix's upcoming A Different World sequel series, with her rendition playing ahead of each new episode when the show premieres on 24 September, according to Deadline.
The sequel follows Deborah, the youngest child of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, as she starts her freshman year at Hillman College — a fictional historically Black college or university, or HBCU, the same setting as the original series. Maleah Joi Moon plays Deborah, while Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy reprise their roles as Dwayne and Whitley.
The 10-episode single-camera series — shot in a cinematic style without a live studio audience — is written, showrun, and executive produced by Felicia Pride. Debbie Allen, who was a creative force on the original series, directed the premiere episode and returns alongside fellow original creatives Gina Prince-Bythewood and Reggie Rock Bythewood (Netflix Tudum).
The original A Different World theme song has its own layered history. Written by Dawn Lewis, Stu Gardner, and Bill Cosby — who created the show as a spinoff of The Cosby Show — the song was performed by a succession of legendary artists across its run. Phoebe Snow sang it in the first season. Aretha Franklin took over for seasons two through five. Boyz II Men closed out the sixth and final season.
For fans of the original, which aired from 1987 to 1993, Brandy's involvement adds another recognizable voice to that lineage. Brandy's own television credits stretch back decades, including the title role in the sitcom Moesha and a turn as Cinderella in the 1997 television musical opposite Whitney Houston.
The sequel arrives at a moment when streaming platforms are leaning heavily into established intellectual property — reviving or continuing series with built-in audiences rather than launching entirely original concepts. Netflix has ordered the show straight to series, meaning no pilot episode was produced first to test audience response.
What makes the theme song assignment notable is how it threads the old and the new. The original A Different World used its theme to signal a fresh musical identity each time the torch passed to a new artist. Brandy now picks up that same torch for a streaming era, where theme songs are often shortened or skipped altogether on platforms that auto-play the next episode.
