Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced on X that 1 billion people use Gemini every month, calling it Google's fastest-growing product ever. The milestone, confirmed in a Google blog post on August 11, makes Gemini the 14th Google product to reach the 1-billion-user mark. Google

The announcement arrived the same week OpenAI disclosed that "more than 1 billion people are putting ChatGPT to work," according to an OpenAI blog post. Reuters data had suggested ChatGPT crossed 1 billion monthly active users as early as June 2026. OpenAI spokesperson Lindsay McCallum said ChatGPT crossed 1 billion monthly users some time ago and hit 1 billion weekly active users in July. The Verge

Both companies arrived at the same number through notably different distribution paths. Gemini's user figure refers to the Gemini app itself, and Gemini preinstalled on Android phones counts toward the total — meaning anyone with a recent Android device who has the app available is included, whether or not they actively open it. Gemini chief Josh Woodward posted that Gemini has more than 100 million active users on iOS. Google spokesperson Alex Joseph said Gemini reached 1 billion users the week before the public announcement.

Gemini's growth trajectory has been steep across the year. At Google I/O in May 2026, Pichai said the Gemini app had 400 million monthly active users a year earlier and had surpassed 900 million, more than doubling in twelve months. Google reported 950 million monthly users on its late-July earnings call, putting the final 50 million users in roughly two to three weeks. In February, the company had announced 750 million. ChatGPT's path to the same milestone shows a different curve. OpenAI reported 900 million weekly active users in February 2026 alongside more than 50 million consumer subscribers and over one million business customers. Reaching 1 billion weekly users five months later represented a deceleration in growth, according to OpenAI's own framing. The company has also stated that every week, 1 billion people turn to ChatGPT for tasks ranging from quick questions and web searches to planning, research, advice, and complex tasks. OpenAI

The broader context here is that both milestones are part of a much larger AI presence each company is building. Google's AI Overviews feature in Search — the AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of search results — had 2.5 billion monthly users as of I/O 2026. AI Mode, Google's most powerful AI Search feature, surpassed 1 billion monthly users at the same event. Pichai said Google is using Gemini models to improve Google Translate, which serves over 1 billion users monthly on its own. On the OpenAI side, the company stated that its models now reach more than one billion active users and more than two million businesses. OpenAI raised $122 billion in March to accelerate the next phase of AI development. Google

What sets these two milestones apart from prior 1-billion-user moments like Gmail, YouTube, Chrome, or Android is the speed and the competitive simultaneity. Gemini went from 400 million to 1 billion monthly users in roughly a year. ChatGPT went from a November 2022 launch to a billion weekly users in under four years, hitting $1 billion in revenue within its first year and generating $1 billion per quarter by the end of 2024. Both products reached 1 billion within weeks of each other, through fundamentally different distribution strategies: Google leverages its Android install base and Search integration; OpenAI relies on direct app engagement and consumer subscription revenue.

Worth flagging is what the growth curves say about where adoption friction remains. OpenAI's own acknowledgment that the move from 900 million to 1 billion weekly users over five months constituted a slowdown is a rare public concession that the steepest part of the adoption curve may be flattening. Google's curve, by contrast, is still compounding, though the inclusion of preinstalled Android Gemini in its user count makes direct like-for-like comparison with ChatGPT's engagement-based metrics difficult. Neither metric is wrong, but they answer different questions: how many people have Gemini available on a device they already use versus how many people actively choose to open ChatGPT in a given week.

Google's Gemini 4 roadmap involves releases at almost a monthly cadence, according to Reuters, which suggests the company intends to sustain model-level momentum to drive engagement growth even as the install base saturates. OpenAI, having crossed the same threshold, faces the parallel question of whether weekly active users translate into durable subscription and enterprise revenue. The company reported more than 50 million consumer subscribers as of February, alongside over one million paying business customers. Reuters

The result is that two AI assistants, built on competing model families and distributed through entirely different channels, have each reached a user base comparable to the largest software products ever built. The next phase for both is less about reaching people and more about what those people do once they are there.
