A partially redacted FCC filing has revealed a new Sonos over-ear headphone called the "Ace Ultra," with the device expected to appear at a company product launch event in September.

The filing was first spotted by the newsletter Lowpass and subsequently reported by Engadget on August 12, 2026. A separate FCC filing dated August 10, 2026 identifies a "Wireless Headphone" under model number RM052, with internal references to the designation S52A, according to ecoustics. The Ace Ultra uses an over-ear design similar to the original Sonos Ace, which launched in 2024 and currently sells for $299.

The filing indicates the Ace Ultra will come in five colors: Greige, Shadow Black, Agave, Blush, and Sand. It also hints that the device will support Sonos Voice Control, the company's built-in voice assistant. That detail lines up with a broader direction set by CEO Thomas Conrad during Sonos' third-quarter earnings call, where he said the company was preparing to make AI a central part of its business strategy. During that same call, Sonos said it was planning a product launch event in September, and the Ace Ultra could be among the products shown there.

For context, the existing Sonos Ace ships with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) — a technology that uses built-in microphones to detect outside sound and generate an opposing signal to cancel it out — along with a rated 30 hours of battery life with ANC turned on. A three-minute charge yields three hours of playback, per Sonos' own user guide. Sonos also sells a "Personal Entertainment Set" bundling the Ace with its Arc Ultra soundbar, positioning the headphones as part of a broader home-theater setup rather than as a standalone wearable.

The AI dimension is the thread to watch. Bloomberg has reported that voice support is critical for a device without a screen to interact with AI assistants and chatbots, and the Ace Ultra's apparent inclusion of Sonos Voice Control suggests the headphone may serve as an input method for whatever AI capabilities Conrad described on the earnings call. The exact nature of that AI integration remains unspecified. 9to5Mac reported on August 11 that Sonos is planning the Ace Ultra with a "significant AI push," but did not detail specific features.

What is verifiable from the filings and earnings-call commentary is a convergence of three signals: a new premium headphone entering regulatory certification, a stated September launch window, and a CEO-level commitment to embedding AI into the product strategy. Whether the Ace Ultra's AI capabilities extend beyond voice-based device control into conversational assistant territory is not yet confirmed by any source.

The broader context here is a familiar pattern. Hardware makers have spent the last two product cycles trying to position headphones as more than audio output devices, with mixed results. The difference is that Sonos enters from a position of ecosystem strength rather than as a standalone audio brand. The existing Ace already integrates with the company's multi-room audio platform — the software system that lets Sonos speakers throughout a home play synchronized or independent audio — and the Arc Ultra bundle suggests Sonos sees the headphone as an extension of the home system, not a competitor to Sony or Bose in the portable segment. If the AI push materializes as a genuine assistant layer, that ecosystem anchor becomes a meaningful differentiator.

The risk, as ever with pre-launch FCC filings, is that redacted documents tell an incomplete story. The model designation, color options, and voice-control hint are solid signals. Everything beyond that, including pricing, specific AI features, and whether the Ace Ultra replaces or sits alongside the existing Ace, remains unconfirmed until the September event.
