Lord of the Rings: War in the North Returns as a Budget Legacy Edition on Modern Consoles
A 2011 action RPG set in Middle-earth is back on modern hardware. Aspyr released The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition on August 11, 2026, for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, Switch and PC, priced at US$19.99 VGC.
The original War in the North launched in November 2011 on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, developed by Snowblind Studios and published by Warner Bros Interactive. It is a hack-and-slash action RPG — a game built around real-time combat and character progression — that draws on both J.R.R. Tolkien's novel and Peter Jackson's film trilogy. Its story follows a separate fellowship battling Agandaûr, a servant of Sauron, in the northern reaches of Middle-earth while the main quest unfolds elsewhere.
Aspyr, which handled development and publication of the Legacy Edition under licence from Warner Bros, has packed in a range of modern conveniences. The re-release supports 60 frames per second on all platforms except the original Switch, along with enemy lock-on targeting, automatic saving, extra save slots and an improved AI that displays visible health, mana and experience bars. Two-player local split-screen co-op is available on every platform except the original Switch, and three-player online co-op is supported across the board.
For fans, this means a fifteen-year-old game that has been difficult to play on current hardware is now accessible at a low price point, with quality-of-life features that bring it closer to modern expectations.
The corporate picture behind the release is unusually tidy. Aspyr is owned by Embracer Group, which also owns Middle-earth Enterprises — the company that holds worldwide exclusive rights to certain elements of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. The licence for this specific title still runs through Warner Bros, but the broader rights holder and the publisher now sit under the same corporate umbrella.
Aspyr described the Legacy Edition as its first Lord of the Rings title and promised more classic releases from the franchise in the future VGC. The company's website promotes the release as "the epic conflict remastered" and "lovingly restored" with "iconic battles" back Aspyr.
The game was announced and released on the same day — August 11, 2026 — with a launch trailer accompanying the drop IGN. No prior announcement or pre-order window preceded it.
Whether Aspyr's promised future Lord of the Rings re-releases will follow the same same-day launch pattern remains an open question. For now, War in the North is available to order on all five platforms.
