Steven Spielberg to Be Honoured at MoMA's Annual Film Benefit, Presented by Chanel
Steven Spielberg will be honoured at the Museum of Modern Art's annual Film Benefit on 12 November in New York, with Chanel returning as presenting sponsor The Hollywood Reporter.
The evening will include a tribute screening series in MoMA's Roy and Niuta Titus theatres, toasting Spielberg's work across more than five decades of film-making. It is the latest chapter in a relationship that, according to Rajendra Roy, MoMA's Celeste Bartos chief curator of film, stretches back over half a century — to 1974, when the museum first introduced Spielberg to audiences through its New Directors/New Films series The Hollywood Reporter.
That same year, The Sugarland Express became Spielberg's first theatrical feature. It is one of eight Spielberg films held in MoMA's permanent collection, alongside Jaws (1975), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), The Color Purple (1985) and Empire of the Sun (1987) The Hollywood Reporter.
Chanel has sponsored the MoMA Film Benefit every year since 2011 and has served as lead sponsor of film at the museum since 2021 The Hollywood Reporter. The annual gala is a fundraising event for MoMA's film department, supporting exhibitions, acquisitions and preservation.
The honour puts Spielberg in notable company. Previous Film Benefit honorees include Martin Scorsese, Guillermo del Toro, Pedro Almodóvar, Quentin Tarantino, Tim Burton, Sofia Coppola, Samuel L. Jackson, George Clooney, Tom Hanks, Cate Blanchett, Julianne Moore, Penélope Cruz, Laura Dern, Tilda Swinton, Alfonso Cuarón, Kathryn Bigelow and Baz Luhrmann The Hollywood Reporter.
Spielberg is no stranger to the other side of this event, either. He and Kate Capshaw served as co-chairs of the 2016 Film Benefit, a tribute to Tom Hanks held on 15 November of that year MoMA Annual Report FY2017.
Spielberg's most recent film is Disclosure Day, starring Emily Blunt, Josh O'Connor, Colin Firth, Colman Domingo, Eve Hewson and Wyatt Russell The Hollywood Reporter.
The 12 November benefit will be held at the museum's Midtown Manhattan home.
