Netflix's Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory Sets Theatrical Release, Reveals Starry Voice Cast

Netflix has dated its animated Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory for a global theatrical opening on 5 November 2027, with the film landing on the streaming service on 22 December — a 47-day window between cinema and home screens (Deadline).
That window, the gap between a film's cinema debut and its streaming premiere, is longer than most Netflix titles get. It signals the company intends to treat this one as an event release, not a quiet drop. Sony Pictures Entertainment will handle international distribution for the theatrical run, a notable partnership for a Netflix-produced project.
Kit Connor voices Charlie Paley and Taika Waititi voices Willy Wonka. The supporting voice cast, revealed alongside the release date, includes Nicola Coughlan, Charithra Chandran, Samson Kayo, Christopher Chung, Kate Winslet and Helena Bonham Carter (Deadline). Winslet and Bonham Carter joining an animated Dahl adaptation brings serious pedigree to the voice booth.
The film is produced by Netflix Animation Studios and directed by Jared Stern and Elaine Bogan. Aron Warner and Timothy Yoo produce, with Waititi also serving as executive producer. The adaptation promises original songs, new characters and familiar faces from Roald Dahl's world, set against a contemporary London backdrop (Deadline).
Netflix acquired the Roald Dahl Story Company roughly five years before announcing the project in April 2026, giving the company control over one of the most adapted estates in children's literature (Deadline).
The merchandising infrastructure around the film is already taking shape. Ferrero Group will launch a Wonka range of 10 seasonal and limited-edition products spanning chocolate, sugar confectionery, ice cream and cereal across the United States and select European markets. Moose Toys has signed on as master toy partner, with its line arriving in 2027 closer to release (Deadline).
For a streaming company, the scale of this rollout looks more like a traditional studio tentpole than a platform exclusive. A theatrical run backed by Sony overseas, a holiday-season streaming debut, and consumer-products partners lined up two years out — Netflix is building this as a franchise play, not a single film.
The November 2027 corridor puts Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory into the autumn family-release window that studios typically reserve for their biggest animated titles. The 22 December streaming date, falling just before Christmas, positions the film for maximum household viewing during the holiday break.
