Fraser Dingwall Named Northampton Saints Club Captain
Northampton Saints have handed the club captaincy to Fraser Dingwall, the 27-year-old centre who has spent more than half his life in the black, green and gold.
Dingwall takes over from George Furbank, who left for Harlequins this summer, and becomes the 69th man to lead the club since Northampton was founded in 1880 (BBC Sport; Northampton Chronicle).
The appointment lands as the natural extension of a playing career rooted entirely at Franklin's Gardens. Dingwall joined the Saints academy at 13 and has since racked up more than 150 senior appearances for the club (BBC Sport). He marked his 150th against Saracens in October 2025, wearing the armband that day as he had on several occasions before (Northampton Saints).
He had already captained the side in last season's Champions Cup Final — European club rugby's showpiece occasion — and was a central figure in both of Northampton's Gallagher Premiership title-winning campaigns, including the 2023/24 crown that made them English champions (Northampton Saints). For a club whose last two domestic titles bookend more than a decade of near-misses, Dingwall has been the constant thread.
At international level, he has won 10 England caps since his Test debut in 2024 (BBC Sport). The Premiership (England's top domestic league) and the Investec Champions Cup (Europe's premier club competition) are the twin peaks of the northern-hemisphere season, and Dingwall has played a leading role in both for his club.
He is also contracted to stay. Dingwall signed an extension in October 2025 that keeps him at Northampton for the 2026/27 season and beyond, a deal struck when the club's leadership succession was already taking shape (Northampton Saints). The formal captaincy, confirmed in the summer of 2026, simply makes official what the dressing room has known for a while.
What stands out is how completely this fits. Dingwall is not an import brought in to steady the ship, nor a marquee signing handed the armband on arrival. He is a local academy graduate who has won titles with the club, captained them in the biggest matches on the calendar, and committed his future to Franklin's Gardens before being asked to lead it. Saints fans will feel they know exactly what they are getting.
Northampton open the new Premiership season as defending champions, and their new skipper has been part of the furniture since he was a teenager. The challenge now is turning familiarity into another title run.
