Fungus on the Pitch: Celta Vigo's La Liga Opener Against Osasuna Postponed
Celta Vigo's first match of the 2026-27 La Liga season has been called off — not by rain, not by a power cut, but by a fungal outbreak that has wrecked the playing surface at their home ground, Estadio de Balaidos.
The club had been scheduled to host Osasuna on Sunday, 16 August, in their season-opening fixture. Instead, La Liga confirmed on 13 August that the match was postponed after a technical inspection found the pitch unfit for football. The inspection, carried out by La Liga officials, identified a fungal outbreak that had damaged the turf across the stadium's playing surface (The Guardian).
A fungal outbreak on a football pitch is exactly what it sounds like: mould or similar organisms colonising the grass, feeding on it and leaving patches dead, bare, or slick. The result is a surface players cannot safely run, pass, or tackle on — and one that could cause serious injury if a match went ahead.
The decision to postpone was agreed jointly by both clubs and the Spanish Football Federation, known as the RFEF, the body that governs football in Spain, following La Liga's inspection report. It was a straightforward call once the condition of the pitch was confirmed: the ground was simply not playable.
Celta Vigo had reportedly been working to repair the surface in the lead-up to the new campaign, but adverse weather conditions set back that recovery effort. The Guardian reports that recent poor weather undermined progress, leaving the pitch in no state to host a competitive match by the time inspectors arrived.
This was set to be Celta's opener for the 2026-27 season, meaning the club will now begin their Laliga campaign later than the rest of the league. A rescheduled date has not yet been announced (Reuters).
