Tyga admitted to using AI on the project in an interview with VIBE, stating that he employed an AI music generator to create '80s-style synths and a guitar solo. All writing and vocals on the album were his own, he said. Billboard described $tarface as an '80s-inspired pop synth project, and the rapper introduced a brand-new alter ego alongside it — a disco pop-leaning departure for the West Coast artist.
The album has faced multiple accusations of being at least partially made with AI. When confronted with the criticism, Tyga's response was blunt: "I don't care." Pitchfork awarded $tarface a score of 0.0, a rare perfect zero from the review publication.
What makes the friction between the two rappers notable is their shared history. Tyga appeared on the remix of Doja Cat's "Juicy" in 2019 — her first song to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, where it peaked at No. 41. They reunited for "Freaky Deaky" in 2022, which reached No. 43 on the same chart. The Billboard Hot 100 tracks the most popular songs in the US each week across all genres, combining streaming, radio airplay and sales.
The dispute sits inside a broader, unresolved conversation in the music industry about AI's place in record-making. Major labels, publishers and rights bodies are still negotiating how AI-generated elements should be licensed, credited and paid for.
