Wakefield Trinity Release Seth Nikotemo on Compassionate Grounds

Wakefield Trinity have released back-rower Seth Nikotemo from his contract with immediate effect, the Super League club confirmed on 14 August 2026.

The 22-year-old Australian, who joined Trinity and made 29 appearances for the club, has returned home to Australia after the two parties reached a mutual agreement to terminate his deal on compassionate grounds (Wakefield Trinity).

Nikotemo's contract had been due to run until the end of the 2027 season, making his departure a significant piece of business for Trinity well before the current campaign reaches its conclusion (Total Rugby League).

Head coach Daryl Powell, speaking to BBC Radio Leeds, explained the reasoning behind the decision. He said Nikotemo had "an issue back at home that he needed to look after," and that the club wanted to support him through it (BBC Sport).

"We wanted to look after him," Powell said.

Nikotemo last featured for Wakefield on 28 June, meaning he had already been absent from the matchday squad for over six weeks before the release was formalised.

For Trinity, losing a player who was contracted for another season and a half leaves a gap in the back row — the loose-forward and second-row positions where Nikotemo operated. For Nikotemo, it means heading back to Australia with his professional future in rugby league now open, at an age where he still has the bulk of his career ahead of him.

Compassionate releases are not uncommon in rugby league, particularly for overseas players who find themselves separated from family by distance and time zones. Clubs routinely weigh a player's wellbeing against sporting considerations, and Trinity have clearly decided that supporting Nikotemo took priority over holding him to his contract.
