Kristen Stewart Sees a Link Between 'The Wrong Girls' and 'American Ultra' — and a Sequel Door Left Ajar

Kristen Stewart has acknowledged a possible connection between one of her dual roles in the new film The Wrong Girls and her character Phoebe from the 2015 action-comedy American Ultra.

Stewart told Deadline that the link made sense to her because Phoebe was "an official lady working at a government agency" — which echoes the setup of Frances, one of two characters she plays in The Wrong Girls, written and directed by Dylan Meyer and currently in theatres as of August 2026. Frances works at a government agency developing a psychic drug; her doppelganger Frankie is an unmotivated college dropout. The two are strangers until Frankie and her best friend Molly, played by Alia Shawkat, stumble on a mysterious substance that lets them read minds and communicate telepathically — all while scrambling to pay rent within 24 hours. In American Ultra, directed by Nima Nourizadeh and written by Max Landis, Stewart played Phoebe, a government agent who fell in love and went into hiding with Mike (Jesse Eisenberg), a test subject in a superhuman drug trial. The two films share a DNA of government drug programmes and ordinary people pulled into extraordinary situations, and Stewart seems to have noticed. Deadline

Meyer wrote The Wrong Girls over 14 years, drawing on stories about herself and her own best friend. The film is a stoner comedy rooted in the weed culture of Los Angeles, made by three native Southern Californians. It runs 99 minutes and carries an R rating. Deadline; Loft Cinema

Meyer told Deadline she feels the pull to expand the Wrong Girls universe, noting that the characters gain superpowers by the end of the film, leaving the door open for a sequel. She does not, however, currently have plans for one. Deadline

For context, American Ultra had its own industry story behind the camera. In March 2014, Lionsgate paid $7 million to pre-buy U.S. distribution rights — a deal struck before the film was finished, betting on the package of Eisenberg and Stewart as a commercial draw.
