George MacKay and Paul Wright Reunite for 'Mission,' Set for Edinburgh Film Festival World Premiere
Scottish director Paul Wright's film Mission, starring George MacKay, will have its world premiere in competition at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. The announcement lands on 14 August 2026, via Variety.
MacKay plays Dylan, an alienated man who pushes himself toward increasingly extreme experiences in a bid to evade death. Rosy McEwen, who broke out in the 2022 film Blue Jean, co-stars as Dylan's estranged sister Claire. Wright has said that Claire's presence reconnects Dylan with childhood and an earlier sense of possibility before the constraints of adulthood closed in.
The film reteams MacKay with Wright, who previously directed him in the 2013 film For Those in Peril. That earlier collaboration was a BAFTA-winning debut set in a Scottish fishing village; Mission moves into more interior and psychological territory. Wright has described the film as exploring "the thin line between transcendence and transgression."
Mission did not begin with plot. Wright told Variety the film started from a feeling of being disconnected from the world and needing something more. Dylan's dangerous behaviour, the director said, grew out of a romantic ideal of an "all or nothing" existence. He drew inspiration from performance artists Chris Burden and Marina Abramović, Dadaism, and the alternative music he found growing up in a small village in Fife. Wright describes outsider figures such as radical performance artists as "modern-day shamans." The BFI, which selected Mission as one of its 2025 "Great 8" projects presented to buyers at Cannes, called the film "a punk exploration of the psyche" (Variety, 2025).
The production is a co-production between Early Day Films and 65 Wilding Films, developed with Screen Scotland and BBC Film. Backing comes from BBC Film, Screen Scotland and Ffilm Cymru Wales with National Lottery funding. The producers are Kate Byers, Linn Waite, Alex Thiele, Marie-Elena Dyche and Lowri Roberts. Blue Finch Films handles worldwide sales — the company that shops the film to distributors territory by territory, the first link in the chain that decides which screens it eventually reaches.
For a film that has travelled from BFI showcase to Cannes selection to Edinburgh competition slot in roughly fifteen months, the festival circuit has functioned as its development track. Edinburgh's competition berth gives Mission its first public screening before Blue Finch begins the sales push in earnest.
