Jon Favreau's 'Oswald the Lucky Rabbit' Series Gets First Look at D23, Sets February 2027 Disney+ Premiere
Disney has revealed the first look at Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, a live-action and hand-drawn 2D animation hybrid series from writer-director Jon Favreau, at the D23 fan event in Anaheim. The three-part miniseries will premiere on Disney+ in February 2027 Variety.
Favreau writes, directs and executive produces. The series is produced by SPA Studios, a detail Favreau confirmed in May 2026 WDWNT. The cast includes Amy Sedaris, Kathryn Hahn, Steve Martin, Al Madrigal, Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Mykal-Michelle Harris and Ryder Allen Variety.
Oswald is older than Mickey Mouse. Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks created the rabbit in 1927 for Universal Pictures. When Universal took control of the character in 1928, Disney and Iwerks went on to create Mickey Mouse — the figure that would define the studio for the next century Variety.
The Walt Disney Company reacquired the rights to Oswald in 2006. The character then entered the public domain in 2023, meaning anyone can use the original version of Oswald without permission Variety. Disney marked the centenary that September with a press release on Oswald's return to the company and a restoration of 27 classic shorts, including Oswald titles, arriving on Disney+ in October 2023 The Walt Disney Company.
On screen, Oswald's appearances have been rare. He shared the frame with Mickey for the first time in the 2010 video game Epic Mickey. He made his first animated appearance in 85 years in the 2013 short Get a Horse! Variety. The Disney+ documentary Once Upon a Studio, released in 2023, features hand-drawn characters including Oswald — and Favreau appears in that documentary as well The Walt Disney Company.
Favreau is no stranger to Disney's streaming slate. He created The Mandalorian, the live-action Star Wars series that anchored Disney+ at launch in 2019, and directs and produces The Mandalorian and Grogu, a Lucasfilm feature film slated for theatrical release in May 2026 Deadline.
For fans, the Oswald series offers something unusual: a blend of live-action performance with traditional 2D animation — the hand-drawn technique that built Disney animation in the first place. A three-part run keeps it tight, closer to an event than an open-ended series. February 2027 is still 18 months away, but the D23 first look gives audiences their earliest glimpse of what Favreau has been building.
