Roberto Bautista Agut scored twice on his football debut for CD Els Ibarsos on 14 August 2026, just over a month after retiring from professional tennis. His new club won the pre-season match 4-2, and the 38-year-old looked right at home.
Bautista Agut is no ordinary Sunday-league recruit. A former Wimbledon semi-finalist, he reached a career-high world ranking of ninth in late 2019, won 12 singles titles on the ATP Tour, and lifted the Davis Cup with Spain that same year. Now he has swapped a racket for boots and joined a seventh-tier Spanish side — CD Els Ibarsos, who compete in the Primera FFCV, the top division of the Valencian Football Federation's regional leagues. The club is based about 60 miles north of Valencia, in Castellon — the region where Bautista Agut himself grew up. CD Els Ibarsos confirmed on Instagram that he is a registered club player and presented him to supporters before the debut.
The football pedigree is genuine. Bautista Agut played for Villarreal's youth teams until the age of 14 before committing fully to tennis. Villarreal, one of La Liga's established clubs, run one of Spain's more respected academy systems. Giving up that pathway at 14 was a bet that paid off spectacularly — 12 professional titles and a place in the world's top ten. Picking football back up at 38, in the region where he grew up, closes a circle that opened when he was a child.
Writing on Instagram, Bautista Agut said the new stage of life is making him very happy. The instinct to compete, clearly, did not retire with the tennis career.
