Chappell Roan Joins Noah Kahan at the Rose Bowl for a Duet of 'California'
Chappell Roan walked out as a surprise guest during Noah Kahan's sold-out Rose Bowl Stadium show in Pasadena, California, on August 15, 2026, and the two performed Roan's song "California" together. Footage of the duet was posted by Billboard the following day (Billboard).
Roan began "California" a cappella before Kahan joined on acoustic guitar, harmonising with her. The song, from Roan's 2023 debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, traces her departure from her home state of Missouri to pursue music in Los Angeles. Kahan told the crowd it was the first Roan song he ever heard and the reason he fell in love with her music, according to Rolling Stone (Rolling Stone).
The duet arrived a few songs before the encore in a 27-song set listed on setlist.fm. Gigi Perez and Annabelle Dinda opened the show, which Kahan's official website lists as sold out (noahkahan.com).
On stage, Roan thanked Kahan directly. "Noah always stands up for me, seriously," she said. "He's a good person, for real." The two artists have a prior philanthropic connection: in October 2025, Roan led the "We Got You" partnership with a $25,000 donation, and both Kahan and Charli XCX pledged to match it, according to Rolling Stone (Rolling Stone). That initiative supports Roan's Midwest Princess Project, launched in 2025, which provides foster care, community connection, and resource access to trans youth.
The Rose Bowl date is part of Kahan's The Great Divide world tour. The North American leg continues with a show at Petco Park in San Diego on August 17, 2026, and is scheduled to wrap on August 31 at T-Mobile Park in Seattle before the tour moves overseas in the autumn.
Roan has her own California dates ahead. She is set to play Olivia Rodrigo's Daisy Chain Fields festival in Irvine on August 29, part of an all-women lineup, and will hold the Super Graphic Spectacular fundraising events at Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on October 21 and 22. Those shows benefit the Midwest Princess Project.
For two artists whose songwriting roots itself in small-town departure and big-city arrival, sharing a stadium stage on the song that started that conversation for both of them gave the collaboration a quiet logic beyond the surprise.
