Swans confirm players involved in alleged Melbourne incident as police investigate

The Sydney Swans have confirmed several of their players were involved in an alleged incident in Melbourne overnight, with Victoria Police investigating a report of a sexual assault at a hotel on Wellington Parade in East Melbourne.

In a statement issued just after midday on Monday, the club said: "The Sydney Swans can confirm several players were involved in an alleged incident in Melbourne last night" (The Age). The Swans said they had notified the AFL and relevant authorities and could not provide further comment at that stage. CEO Matthew Pavlich was expected to make a further statement on Monday afternoon (The Guardian).

Victoria Police said detectives were investigating the report and that the alleged incident occurred at a hotel in the early hours of 17 August. The exact circumstances were yet to be established and the investigation remained ongoing (ABC News).

Police were seen at the Pullman Hotel near the MCG on Monday morning, where the Swans were staying. Three women were reportedly seen in the hotel foyer at about 7:30am, remonstrating with Sydney Swans club officials, including coach Dean Cox (Cairns Post).

The Swans had stayed in Melbourne overnight after a 36-point win over Essendon at the MCG on Sunday. It had been a strong weekend for the club on the field. Sydney sat second on the AFL ladder with 17 wins heading into the final round of the 2026 season, and were due to play their next game at home at the SCG against North Melbourne (ABC News).

With the finals series approaching and a top-two finish on the line, the timing could hardly be heavier for the Swans. But the gravity of the police investigation dwarfs any football consideration. No charges have been laid. The AFL has been notified, and the matter is in the hands of Victoria Police.
