Hayden Panettiere Dies at 36; Police Find No Signs of Foul Play
Hayden Panettiere, the actor known for Heroes and Nashville, has died at the age of 36 in Greenville, South Carolina. Police said there were no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances, though the case remains under investigation.
The Greenville Police Department confirmed to Variety that police and emergency medical services responded at 1:51 p.m. on Sunday to a report of an unresponsive female. An acquaintance of Panettiere had placed the 911 call. Medical assistance was administered on arrival, but Panettiere was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Greenville Police Department is investigating the death in conjunction with the Greenville County Coroner's Office. An official cause of death has not yet been confirmed and will follow an autopsy. People magazine reported that on dispatch audio, officials could be heard discussing an "overdose" and "cardiac arrest" in connection with the death. Those terms appeared on emergency communications, not in a coroner's finding.
Panettiere stepped away from the entertainment industry in 2016. She returned in 2023 with Scream VI, reprising her role as Kirby Reed from the 2011 film Scream 4 — a return that fans had waited more than a decade to see. In May 2026, she published a memoir titled This Is Me: A Reckoning, about growing up in Hollywood and the personal struggles that shaped her life and career.
Tributes arrived quickly after the news broke. Viola Davis, Bethany Joy Lenz, and Melissa Barrera were among the celebrities who publicly honoured Panettiere's memory.
Panettiere had been in the public eye since childhood. She played Claire Bennet, the indestructible cheerleader at the centre of NBC's Heroes, which debuted in 2006. She later starred as country singer Juliette Barnes in the musical drama series Nashville, which ran from 2012 to 2018.
For fans, her career traced two distinct chapters: a young performer who became a network-television fixture before stepping back, and the actor who returned to the screen on her own terms. The investigation by Greenville authorities remains ongoing.
