Prime Video Builds a 'Marília-verse' Around Brazil's Lost Queen of Sertanejo
Prime Video has secured the rights to the music and life story of Marília Mendonça, the Brazilian singer who died in a plane crash in November 2021 at age 26, and is building what it calls a "Marília-verse" — a slate of projects centred on the artist, anchored by a biopic film and a documentary series. Amazon MGM Studios is producing the biopic, which will stream on Prime Video in 2027, according to Deadline.
The first piece of the slate to reach audiences is the documentary series Marília Mendonça: Sentimento Louco, which premieres on Prime Video on 16 October 2026, as reported by Deadline in July.
The biopic carries a weight of expectation that Amazon MGM Studios addressed with an unusually thorough casting process. More than 1,000 screen tests were conducted over the course of a year before first-time actress Marina Versos was cast as Mendonça, Deadline reports. Versos has no prior screen credits; the role will mark her debut.
Dainara Toffoli directs the film, with a screenplay by Carina Schulze and Patrícia Andrade. The supporting cast includes Hermila Guedes, Klara Castanho, Marcelo Serrado, Sophia Valverde, Daniel Haidar, Alejandro Claveaux, George Sauma, André Torquato, Luccas Oliver, Igor Armucho, Davi Bensá and Marcus Gouveia.
Mendonça was a singer and songwriter from the state of Goiás who rose from a modest background to become one of the most prominent figures in Brazilian sertanejo — the country's dominant popular music genre, a rural-rooted cousin to American country. Her death in a small-plane crash alongside her uncle and producer, Abicieli Silveira Dias Filho, and two crew members drew mourning on a national scale in Brazil.
Julia Priolli, Head of Creative for Brazilian Originals at Amazon MGM Studios, is overseeing the slate. The "Marília-verse" concept — multiple interconnected projects tied to a single real-life figure — mirrors the franchise-building model more commonly associated with superhero and genre fiction, though here applied to a music biography.
Prime Video's Brazilian originals operation has been expanding its footprint. The platform's true crime series Tremembé drew strong audience response and has been renewed for a second season, Deadline reports.
For fans of Mendonça, the slate means a year of releases ahead: the Sentimento Louco documentary in October 2026, then the biopic film in 2027. For a singer whose career was cut short at 26, the screen will carry her story forward in a way the stage no longer can.
