Final-round voting for the 78th Emmy Awards opened at 9:00 a.m. PT on August 17, 2026, with ballots in the hands of more than 20,000 Television Academy members. Voting runs through Wednesday, August 26, at 10 p.m. PT. (Variety; Television Academy)

Mariska Hargitay will host the ceremony, which NBC airs live coast-to-coast on Monday, September 14 at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, with streaming also available. (NBC) The artisans ceremony — previously called the Creative Arts Emmys, covering craft and technical categories — takes place over two nights, September 5 and 6. (Variety)

HBO Max leads the network field for most nominations, anchored by the reigning drama champion The Pitt and the fifth and final season of Hacks. The Pitt won the drama series Emmy for its first season in the previous cycle. If it repeats, it would become only the 11th drama to win the top prize for its first two seasons — the first since Mad Men did it in 2008 and 2009. (Variety)

On the comedy side, the field is guaranteed a new winner. The Studio, which took the comedy series Emmy last cycle, is sitting this round out. The Bear won the category in 2023, Hacks in 2024. (Variety)

Two broadcast-network comedies carry notable storylines. Abbott Elementary is on its fifth consecutive comedy series nomination; if it wins, it would be the first broadcast comedy to take the category since Modern Family in 2014. Only Murders in the Building is on its fifth straight nomination as well, sitting at 0-for-4 despite winning seven Emmys in other categories over the years. (Variety)

Apple TV has a milestone within reach. If Slow Horses or Pluribus wins drama series, Apple would claim its first drama series Emmy ever. The streamer has already won the comedy series Emmy twice — for Ted Lasso and The Studio. (Variety)

The nominations were announced July 8, 2026, after nominations-round voting on June 11. (Television Academy) Juried award winners — categories where all entrants are evaluated by a panel and multiple winners may be named — were announced August 12. (Television Academy)

Two guest-actor nominations carry their own weight. Rob Reiner is nominated posthumously for guest actor in a comedy series. Michael J. Fox is nominated in the same category and will also receive the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award during the telecast, the Television Academy announced July 29. (Variety; Television Academy)

In a quieter development, the Television Academy and the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences said on July 27 that they are in exploratory talks about reunification — a potential merger of the two organisations that split decades ago. (Television Academy)

What makes this cycle unusual is how many major categories are genuinely open. A defending drama champion (The Pitt) and a defending comedy champion (The Studio) would normally anchor the conversation. With one sitting out and the other facing a narrow field of historical firsts, the next ten days of voting will shape a night with very little settled in advance.
