Carly Rae Jepsen and Lena Dunham's '10 Things I Hate About You' Musical Sets August 2027 Broadway Start
Producer Mike Bosner announced on 17 August 2026 that a Broadway musical adaptation of the 1999 film 10 Things I Hate About You will begin performances on 17 August 2027, according to Billboard.
Carly Rae Jepsen and Ethan Gruska are writing the music and lyrics. The book — the spoken script that frames the songs in a stage musical — is co-written by Lena Dunham and playwright Jessica Huang. Christopher Wheeldon, a Tony-winning director and choreographer, serves as director and choreographer. Tom Kitt handles music supervision, arrangements and orchestrations, the layer of work that shapes how the score sounds when played by a Broadway pit orchestra.
Variety confirmed the performance date and creative team independently on the same day.
The project was first reported by Deadline's Greg Evans on 23 April 2025, when the adaptation was disclosed as being in development with Jepsen and Dunham attached. Variety corroborated the creative team the same day. The musical was later featured at the 2026 Broadway Across America conference in February, a industry showcase where producers pitch upcoming shows to touring presenters and investors.
The 1999 film, directed by Gil Junger and loosely based on Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, starred Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles as high-school antagonists who fall into an unlikely romance. In a separate story, Deadline reported on 6 May 2025 that Junger is planning a sequel film trilogy, unconnected to the stage production.
For Jepsen, the musical marks a move into theatrical songwriting after a pop career that has produced four studio albums and a global following built on singles like "Call Me Maybe." Gruska, her collaborator on the score, is a Los Angeles-based songwriter and producer who has worked with Fiona Apple and Phoebe Bridgers. Dunham, best known as the creator and star of the HBO series Girls, has been expanding into stage work; Huang is a playwright whose credits include The Chinese Lady and Scene Girls.
Wheeldon's involvement pairs the project with a choreographer-director whose Broadway credits include An American in Paris and MJ the Musical. Kitt, the music supervisor, won a Pulitzer Prize for the musical Next to Normal and has been involved in productions including Almost Famous and Flying Over Sunset.
No casting has been announced. A theatre has not yet been named.
