Fast & Furious Turns 25: Cast Reunites in Los Angeles for Anniversary Screening
Twenty-five years after it first roared into cinemas, the original The Fast and the Furious got a birthday party worthy of the franchise it launched. Universal Pictures hosted a 25th-anniversary celebration screening at Directors Village in Los Angeles on 17 August 2026, drawing the core cast back to the red carpet (Deadline).
Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster and Tyrese Gibson all attended, alongside Meadow Walker — the daughter of the late Paul Walker, who starred in the 2001 original and appeared across the franchise until his death in 2013 (Deadline). Her presence carried a particular weight. At a similar anniversary screening held during the Cannes Film Festival in May, Diesel introduced her to the audience with an emotional tribute to her father (People).
That midnight Cannes screening — a special 25th-anniversary presentation of the first film — was the earlier stop on what has become a year-long victory lap for the property (Just Jared). The cast walked the red carpet on the Croisette in May before reconvening in Los Angeles this week.
The film being honoured is where it all started. Directed by Rob Cohen, with a screenplay credited to Gary Scott Thompson, Erik Bergquist and David Ayer, The Fast and the Furious arrived in the summer of 2001 and spawned one of the longest-running and highest-grossing film series in Universal's history (Deadline).
The anniversary is also a commercial event. Universal has released a 25th Anniversary Re-Release Trailer announcing that the original film is "Back in Cinemas August 28" — a return to theatres timed to the quarter-century mark (Universal Pictures). For a franchise built on theatrical spectacle, putting the first film back on the big screen is a reminder of where the road began.
The road has an end in sight, too. Universal's upcoming-movies page lists Fast Forever — expected to be the final instalment in the main franchise — for theatrical release on 17 March 2028 (Universal Pictures). That gives the series a roughly two-and-a-half-year runway from this anniversary to its conclusion.
For fans, the Los Angeles screening lands as both a look backward and a countdown. The cast that gathered on 17 August is, in effect, standing between the film that started everything and the one meant to close it out.
