Bethesda's Fallout 4 Creations Update Arrives August 18, and Players Should Back Up Their Mods First

Bethesda released a new Fallout 4 Creations update on 18 August, bringing what the studio described as "general improvements" to the game's modding system — the in-game marketplace where players browse, download, and manage community-made content (Eurogamer).
There is a catch, and Bethesda flagged it directly. The update clears every player's Creations list on first launch after the patch installs. Anyone who has built up a collection of mods — new quests, weapons, armour, player homes — will need to re-download everything. Bethesda's official patch notes confirm this behaviour: Creations are wiped on first launch, and players restore them by reloading a saved load order (Bethesda Help).
To make that process painless, Bethesda advised players to take two steps before installing the update: log in and back up save files, and manually save the load order — the sequence in which mods are arranged, which matters because mods can conflict with each other if stacked in the wrong order. Once the load order is saved, players can re-download their entire Creations list in one action when the update goes live (Eurogamer).
For anyone whose Creations or Mods menu option has disappeared entirely — a known issue when certain mods alter the game's user interface — Bethesda's help pages recommend unsubscribing from any Creations that changed the UI, which should restore the menu (Bethesda Help).
The Creations system itself is relatively new territory for Bethesda's older titles. The company rolled it out for Skyrim Special Edition and Skyrim Anniversary Edition in December 2023 across PC storefronts — Steam, the Epic Games Store, and the Microsoft Store — giving players a unified way to build, share, and find community content (Bethesda.net). A Skyrim Creations update followed the same month, adding optimisations, new features, and Steam Deck support (Bethesda.net).
Now Skyrim is in line for another round. Bethesda confirmed that a similar Creations update is in the works for its flagship fantasy RPG, though no release date was given. The studio said it would share details "soon" (Eurogamer).
For Fallout 4 players, the practical takeaway is straightforward: save your load order before you let the patch through, and the re-download is a single click. Skip that step, and you will be rebuilding your mod list from memory.
