Queen Camilla reveals the strain of keeping King Charles's cancer diagnosis secret
Queen Camilla has spoken for the first time about the difficulty of keeping King Charles's cancer diagnosis private in the days before Buckingham Palace announced it to the world.
Her remarks came in a special seven-minute film released to mark the 30th anniversary of Maggie's, the cancer charity of which she is President. The conversation was filmed at Clarence House with Maggie's chief executive Dame Laura Lee (Royal Central).
Camilla described a moment during an official visit to a new Maggie's centre at the Royal Free Hospital in London on 31 January 2024. She had recently learned that Charles had been diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer, but the Palace had not yet made the news public. Standing among cancer patients and support staff, she said, she was "longing to let it out" (Royal Central).
Five days later, on 5 February 2024, Buckingham Palace confirmed the diagnosis. The cancer had been discovered during medical care Charles was receiving for an enlarged prostate. He has never publicly disclosed the type of cancer (Royal Central).
Camilla told Dame Laura that holding the news back had been "difficult." She had known the King would need treatment, but with no official announcement made, she could not share what she knew with the people she was meeting — people who understood cancer firsthand (BBC News).
The film itself is a charity anniversary piece, not a royal broadcast. Maggie's operates 27 centres across the UK, each located alongside an NHS cancer hospital, offering practical and emotional support free of charge. Camilla has been the charity's President for several years, and her involvement long predates Charles's diagnosis (Royal Central).

Charles postponed his public duties when treatment began in February 2024. What gives the film its weight is the gap between the public role and the private knowledge. Camilla was at a cancer support centre, surrounded by people living with the disease, carrying a secret she was not yet free to share. She called it "difficult." The word does the work.
