A German-Dutch partnership announced on 19 August 2026 will shift the digital backbone of the Netherlands' book trade onto new rails. Bookwire, an international digital distribution company based in Germany, has taken over digital fulfilment — the behind-the-scenes delivery of ebooks and audiobooks to retailers and libraries — for CB (Centraal Boekhuis), the Dutch logistics organisation that has served the country's publishing sector for decades. The scale of the handover is considerable. Bookwire has onboarded CB's entire digital catalogue: approximately 80,000 ebooks and 25,000 audiobooks. That content now flows to more than 200 distribution channels, including Kobo, the Dutch Royal Library (KB), and over 130 local webshops through the RDW network. More than 500 publishing partners sit on the combined platform.

For publishers, though, the view from the front end will look familiar. The partnership is hybrid: Bookwire operates as the technology provider in the background, while publishers continue to work through CB's existing system interface. In other words, the plumbing changes; the tap stays where it was.

Jeroen van Eijk, IT Director at CB, called the partnership "a significant technical milestone" for the organisation, allowing it to adopt a new distribution platform and phase out legacy technology. Jochum Winkelman, Commercial Director at CB, said the arrangement combines CB's deep understanding of the Dutch publishing market with Bookwire's international technology expertise and global distribution capabilities. Christian Lindemann, COO of Bookwire, said the partnership proves that "innovation doesn't mean disruption" — that a global technology platform can sit alongside deep local market expertise without upending either.

CB describes itself as the logistics expert for the media and healthcare sectors, employing more than 800 professionals across business areas that include logistics, e-fulfilment, ebook and audiobook distribution, print on demand, and financial and information services. Its role in the Dutch book trade is structural: it is the central hub through which physical and digital books move from publisher to retailer.

The partnership builds on an earlier distribution deal between Bookwire and CB reported in January 2025, at which point the two companies said publishers would remain involved throughout the implementation process. British trade publication BookBrunch covered the partnership on 18 August 2026, with the formal announcement following through Publishing Perspectives on 19 August.

What stands out is the model itself — a long-term collaboration in which a national distribution institution retains its relationships and interface while handing its digital infrastructure to an international technology partner. For the Dutch publishers and readers at the end of the chain, the change is designed to be felt in reliability and reach rather than in disruption.
