Bruce Dern Hits the Road in 'Northbound', World-Premiering at Edinburgh Film Festival 2026
Bruce Dern plays an octogenarian who breaks out of a nursing home and drives 2,000 miles toward Canada in Northbound, a road movie that had its world premiere at the 2026 Edinburgh International Film Festival. The film runs 92 minutes and carries a 15+ age rating, according to the festival's official listing (Edinburgh Film Festival).
Dern, now in his late eighties and still working at a pace that would tire actors half his age, takes the lead as Arthur — a resident of an elder-care home in Arizona who is, as the festival put it, "living out his final days." Rather than wait them out, Arthur recruits his uptight grandson Kevin, played by Hunter Parrish, to help him leave. Their destination: a whisky distillery Arthur founded in Canada, nearly 2,000 miles north (Variety).
The cast fills out with familiar faces. Dylan Baker plays Kevin's father, a distant businessman. Joanna Cassidy appears as Arthur's ex-wife. Julia Fox turns up as Adrien, a hitchhiker the pair encounter en route. The late Graham Greene has a cameo (Variety).
William Scoular directed from a screenplay by Ashlin Halfnight. Peter Menzies Jr., whose credits include Cliffhanger and The Meg, served as cinematographer (Variety).
The Edinburgh premiere on 13 August 2026 placed Northbound in a programme that included 21 world premieres and a reference to Trainspotting, the festival's most famous hometown export. Ken Burns' documentary Sea of Glass was also announced as part of the lineup (Variety).
Before Edinburgh, the film had already travelled a long road of its own. Hyde Park International, a sales company that handles distribution rights for international buyers, launched sales and showed first footage to distributors at the American Film Market in Las Vegas in October 2024 (Screen Daily). The AFM — the American Film Market — is where independent producers pre-sell territories to international distributors, often before a film is finished. That Northbound was showing footage there nearly two years before its festival premiere signals a project built on international pre-sales rather than studio financing.
For Dern, Northbound adds another entry to a filmography spanning more than six decades, from The Cowboys and Coming Home to Nebraska, which earned him an Academy Award nomination at 77. A road movie built around an octogenarian lead is still a rarity in an industry that tends to write older characters into the margins. Whether that proves a selling point for wider distribution beyond the festival circuit will depend on the deals Hyde Park International can now close with buyers who attended the Edinburgh premiere.
