An 82-year-old German man identified only as Hans S pleaded guilty on August 18, 2026, to the sexual assault and murder of 24-year-old American tourist Amy Lopez — a crime that had gone unsolved for nearly 32 years in the western German city of Koblenz.

Hans S entered the courtroom at the Koblenz regional court with a walking frame. After his defense lawyer, Volker Klein, told the court that his client admitted the crime, the presiding judge asked him to confirm. He said yes. The courtroom was packed, reflecting the case's notoriety in the Rhineland-Palatinate region.

Amy Lopez, from Texas, was last seen alive in September 1994 heading toward Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, the landmark citadel above the Rhine, while touring Europe. Her body was discovered two hours later near the fortress. Prosecutors allege that Hans S, then 49, encountered Lopez by chance on the steep path leading up to the fortress. They say he lured her under false pretenses into a secluded area beneath the structure known as the General von Aster room, named for a 19th-century Prussian general. There, prosecutors say, he handcuffed her, sexually assaulted her, and stabbed her nine times. He is formally accused of murder committed to satisfy sexual urges, a classification under German criminal law that carries a life sentence.

The breakthrough came through advances in forensic technology. Roughly four years before the trial, improved DNA detection methods identified a trace on fragments of skin found on Lopez's trousers. That evidence sat unused until last year, when Koblenz authorities set up a dedicated cold-case team — a unit focused on long-dormant investigations — after decades of little movement. In the year before the arrest, the case had also appeared on a national German television program about unsolved crimes, with repeated public appeals for information.

Hans S was arrested at a retirement home in the Koblenz area in February 2026. The arrest followed a police operation in which saliva samples were taken from volunteers. Prosecutors cited a clear DNA match between one of those samples and the genetic trace from Lopez's clothing. His full name has not been released, following German privacy conventions for criminal proceedings.

His lawyer told the German news agency DPA that the case had weighed heavily on Hans S and that he had wanted closure, which was why he voluntarily provided a sample. Hans S had been convicted of a sexual offence in 1999, five years after Lopez's killing. At that time, police did not have enough DNA evidence to connect him to the 1994 case.

A psychiatric evaluation commissioned by prosecutors found Hans S to have been criminally responsible at the time of the crime. A final psychiatric assessment, however, will not be delivered until the end of the trial. German courts treat such evaluations as central to sentencing in cases involving older defendants, particularly when decades have passed between the offense and prosecution.

The broader context here is how incremental improvements in forensic DNA analysis can reopen investigations long considered dormant. The original evidence from Lopez's clothing yielded nothing usable in 1994. It took successive generations of analytical sensitivity — each one able to detect smaller and smaller traces — to isolate and profile the microscopic skin fragments on her trousers, plus a renewed investigative push to build a comparative database through voluntary sampling.

A verdict is expected early next month. Under German sentencing for murder convictions, a life sentence is the statutory maximum. For a defendant who will turn 83 this year, the practical shape of any prison term will depend on the court's assessment of culpability, psychiatric fitness, and whether imprisonment is feasible at his age.
